Talking OT: Cows, CIDR, Cystorelin, live bull...Positive preg test

We have a Jersey cow that has had some issues in the past with not cleaning out her placenta after calving. This past year she was with a bull for a month or two and didn't breed.

After doing a lot of "goat" research and finding out that Cystorelin was produced originally for dairy cows with her issues, I decided to use a CIDR and Cystorelin on her and cover her with a live bull.

You should SEE the applicator for the cow size CIDR!!! Anyway, I found a cow protocol online and adhered to it. (Cystorelin, CIDR, Lute, pull CIDR, Cystorelin) I never saw anything! I pulled blood at day 55, sent to BioTracking (only $2.50 for them) and I received the results today! It worked!! I am so thrilled. We are using a Reg. Dexter bull this year. Pray for heifers!!

I saw the thread title and had to double check which forum I was in.

Fingers crossed for heifers.

eta: the first time I saw a 'seeder' for a goat I was like "awww. how tiny and cute." LOL

Sorry, I go to the Cattle forum sometimes but there are a LOT of ....guys over there. I like to share my joy with my "goat friends" because we are different over here.

Glad you all are here!!

I appreciate you posting here Gena!! CONGRATS!!! I am hoping we will be celebrating this soon...we have been having a hard time getting our 3yr old Jersey to take. Was considering doing a lute and getting her back with the bull, but can't get the vet to call me back...why is that?

Do you do your own tail bleed, blood draw? Any tips for a newbie? How do you get a blood sample out of a moving vein (cow jumping around)...makes me want to stick with goats, but I really love this cow and want some Jersey cream (and not to mention a calf!).

I learned tail-bleeding (like a lot of other things) watching a video on Youtube!! If you have a helper to hold that tail straight up in the air and in line with the spine, the cow doesn't move much and the blood just shoots out! I use a 12cc syringe and an 18g needle. I transfer to a red top tube and there you go! The $2.50 preg test is the ticket! I shipped in the small flat rate Priority Mail box on Tuesday and have results this evening. Yeah, Team!

I would HIGHLY recommend the CIDR and Cystorelin! The vet told us the last time she calved that she may have issues. We preg tested in the spring to see if the bull got her before we sold him and it was negative. We brought Reuben in in June and 5 of the 6 girls are bred. The other isn't with him all the time.

The vet suggested Multi-Min ahead of time, too, which we did also. I bolused her, too, with a Copasure cap for the "500# and over" dose. She looks great. I just used my "goat" knowledge on my cow and it worked!!!
