I'm just in from milking Katy for the first time. I'd forgotten how fun it is to milk a first freshener--not that Katy is that but, well, you know. At least she didn't fling herself upside down on the milking stand the way Jadzia did (and wasn't getting Jadzia's head out of the stanchion...interesting).
I'm posting because I'm surprised at the taste of her milk. It's delicious! All I've milked to date have been Nubians and briefly, a Boer, and I've never had raw milk from any other breeds. Katy's is the tastiest so far! Yum! Too bad there are only 5 ounces of it.
But, no strings, no lumps, again the CMT was okay and since I had a pack of Dr. Naylors cards in my milking kit, I tried that too. Everything checks out.
Now I have to decide if I should breed her or not.

There are no other supernumerary teats in the herd she's from (they're IDGA-registered Alpines, though I haven't registered Katy because of her supernumerary teat) and the small one she has didn't interfere with milking. I'll keep any offspring if I do--and hope for bucklings to wether. I could train doelings to cart and pack and specify in my will (I have a good, animal-savvy executor) that they have to go to working homes instead of breeding.
After tasting that yummy milk, I am sure tempted...
