selling/butchering goats
I am looking for advice on how much to charge for a six month old buck. I have an interested person and she has asked if we will slaughter it and she will pick it up and process it herself. The issue is I am uncertain how much to charge. Any help with this is greatly appreciated

How much does her weigh? What breed?
What is she expecting from the "slaughter"? Just kill it or eviscerate and skin it?

If you can, call your closest livestock sale barn and ask them what price goat is fetching per lb. Weigh the goat, do the lb math, go from there. I would add a bit for the cost of slaughter.

I'd add $50.

Eek! I think $50 for slaughter is way too high. $5 a bullet + $20 if you are gutting and skinning. That is $25 for 15 minutes worth of work.

That's half what they charge at the local slaughter house, and you need to think of disposal as well. Don't sell yourself short. You are already doing them a HUGE favor!!!
Also, due to ridiculous regulations, what you are doing may not be legal in your location.

Our butcher charges a $35 kill fee. I would check on regulations though. Or have her buy him alive deliver him to her house then shoot him on her property.

As far as I know, you can shoot an animal for someone legally here....but I doubt you are allowed to charge for it. And I know you can't legally do any of the butchering and charge for it. So don't charge a slaughter fee, just charge a slightly higher price per lb.
I just sold a fat butcher wether for $1.60 per lb. He weighed 100 lbs. I then butchered it free of charge. They took home wrapped roasts, etc already frozen.
I'm more comfortable with them taking home frozen meat in coolers than warm freshly killed meat. I don't know how they will handle it afterwards. Frozen meat goes straight home and into their freezer.
As far as what the local proccesser charges? I can get any size goat killed, wrapped, ground, etc, anything I want, for $50 just up the road. Another one down south of me does it for $40, according to a friend.
So, I usually butcher my own if I want roasts, etc. But if I have a mature doe/buck to butcher and I want ground meat, I take it in to the butcher and pay them the $50. Get it all ground and packaged, get the organs and bones back for my dogs. Thats a $50 well spent.
I understand in some areas its much higher to get a goat processed.

Is that just the kill fee or the whole proccessing fee??
I agree with shooting him at her place. Charge her for the fuel to get there and back, too. Shooting him there should help insure he is properly proccessed in a timely manner. Really, they should be shot, bled, skinned, gutted, all in a matter of minutes for the best quality meat. And its much easier to skin if done while goat is still warm.

Is this the kill fee or the disposal of the remains?? If my butcher charged me to dispose of the remains, I'd just go get them. I usually do that anyway as my LGDs will eat absolutely everything but the actual rumen contents.
I already ask for all the bones and scraps back for the dogs.
I know this won't work for those who don't feed raw.
What some butchers charge is highway robbery.

Disposal of remains. They explained it was an extra charge if I didn't want to haul off the eviscerated stuff and the hide.

That's just kill fee, our butcher charges .35/lb cut and wrap. Alice why would there be a disposal fee if it is all done at the other lady's house. She's getting a good deal make her dispose of it or feed it to the dogs.

We just had a 6 month old buck slaughtered, hung for 10 days, butchered into roasts/other cuts, wrapped and frozen for $42 + tax at our local butchers.

I just took 5 SMALL goats to a butcher, I talked them down to 30 bucks ea. to just quarter them. their regular price is 75 and includes more types of cuts. (I dont even know what they do) I would never pay 75 for the service, but 30 is worth bypassing the deed imo.
Also, 3 nigerians and two mini nubians look TINY next to some full size boers in the next pen over.
