I am tossing something out there to my MO neighbors...
We haul cattle for a living. That being said, we do own and operate a flatbed trailer to haul hay. We have hauled for ourselves and neighbors for several years now.
I asked about Rye hay the other night because, truth is, I am looking toward winter at the preparations I have made and HOPING it will be enough and, somewhat doubting it. I have been contacted by 4-5 "goat friends" in the last week or two about hay. I want as big a bang for my buck as the next guy (maybe more...not admitting to anything ), so I have been looking for the best QUALITY hay at the MOST affordable price.
Most goat people don't have "vast" barns for hay storage. I have some, but not enough. Therefore, I have been looking at round bales.
Cutting to the chase here...
I have found Rye hay in MS that is NOT cereal grain and was cut at the beginning of this summer and we can haul 38 bales at a time. I am wondering if we were able to do that, if others here could benefit from this at $75 a bale (picked up here). These are 4x5 net-wrapped rounds. I did not ask bale weight but I guess I could. (I have emailed to ask for pictures and bale weight.)
PM if this is something that could help. They would be unloaded approximately 20 miles south of Ava and we can load smaller trailers from here (we have a tractor to do that).
I have spoken for 38 bales but there is more available.
ETA: This is not a money making adventure...We are paying a driver, plus fuel, maintenance, and expenses. Our other trucks are still hauling cattle as usual. Our driver is a retiree, working part-time, because we can't find anyone else willing to work.

I know Tin Mom and KimM are looking for hay. Kim is probably too far away but Tin Mom might be interested. Donna 1982 was in the market for hay too.
So nice of you to help out!

I am going to have to google and see how far you are from me. Momma is bringing some down this way from Kentucky when she comes for the fair but you can never have to much hay.

Let me talk to Dh. We don't usually have a way to handle round bales, but he might be able to figure something out.

Alice, do you know anyone in or around Thayer with a tractor to unload it to your trailer? That is a possibility. He comes up 63 through West Plains.
Tin Mom and Donna, our trucks usual rest just off of exit 61 on I-44 west of Springfield. If I could find someone close by there with a tractor to get it from trailer to trailer, that would be a LOT closer to both of you! Betsy, round bales at least roll. Or, you can use a strap and a tree to hold them while you drive the trailer out from under them. There are options. Round bales aren't my choice either (Lg. Squares are my cup of tea...but they don't put them up in that part of the world). I am willing to peel of round bales because they are so much more economical than small squares. Most sm. sq. bales here are about 50# and $8-10 a bale. Eight hundred pounds of hay at that price is twice the cost of these bales. Google Rye hay. It says it is (generally) 16% protein and green! The man is supposed to send me pictures tomorrow. I'll keep you posted.

I am making invoices and arrangements to send our driver and truck out tomorrow for his hay runs this week.
I am wondering if the folks that are thinking can give me an idea of how many they are "thinking"? I have one that wants 3, another that may need 7, I'll, of course, take what's left but I am wondering if we will need more that one load.
This address comes straight to my computer truckinginquiries@hughes.net
thanks!

I was trying to help out a friend with Percherons and Highland cattle, but the logistics aren't working.

38 bales times $75 is $2850, correct?

I have asked for and he says he is sending me pictures. I know it is NOT the cereal grain because I asked. As to perrenial or annual, I'm not sure.

If they want a whole load or you can split a load up over in that neck of the woods, we can deliver to one location over there.

I ask because my dairy farmer brother-in-law says it makes a difference. I'm taking orders on questions to ask from him over the phone.LOL!! I ask his advice because he has experience with grazing Rye.

I'm calling....Ok, it is Annual. (He said, yes, it has to be planted every year.) And another person asked about heading out. It was cut after it headed but the seeds were not mature. Does this help??
