Breeding Time

I purchased two little bucks this spring to add some diversity to my herd. I only needed one but the price and the backgrounds were right so I got the two. They have keep each other company as well. My herdsire has fathered most of the herd and I needed to get some outside blood.
Today my herd queen came off the milk stand hollering. She is generally a very quiet and mild goat. She headed toward the buck area and I put her in with both of them. She quickly rejected the advances of one and I separated him from them. Since he was now on the fenceline with the does, my one who has bred through the fence before had her butt right up to his nose. I put her in with him and he immediately bred her and then after a bit bred again. Meanwhile the herd queen and her choice bred.
So if it took I'll have late january babies. WhooHoo!

Oh yes, there are photos of the couples on my blog today, as well. Meanwhile the third doe in heat decided to breach the fence...Peppe did his thing immediately and the third doe had such a smug face after all was said and done.

mabeane, how do you keep your kids warm in January? I have been too afraid of the cold to breed my does so early. I do have a warm barn to keep them in.

We have a heat lamp we use for a couple of days if necessary. They seem to get heavy coats very early when born in the winter. Our goat area is not heated.
