Talking New buck is home! (pics)

Mentioned in a previous thread that I was hoping to bring home an Alpine buck so I didn't have to breed all my girls to my LM buck.....

Tonka isn't sure if he likes having a roomate again, but Austin is home Got him here around midnight Sunday....... He's a bit lean for my taste.......needs some groceries, especially with rut coming on, and his feet are going to take a while to get sorted out, but overall he's pretty good..... Busted his giant curvy scur off his 1st day here, so we had to doctor that up. Huge bloody mess, but at least I won't have to trim that side now

He *was* a sweetie & with no buck smell..... Would answer to his name & lean on you for scratches, but that was before he spotted the girls & now he cares for nothing but them

I saw him as a baby, and was a bit bummed when I saw him again & the width he appearded to have is gone....... He's all gawky long legs & more narrow than I wanted, he's uber dairy.....Not sure why he isn't wider...... His dam has plenty of width, as do his sisters I've seen (1 full sister, & his 1/2 sister) But my girls have width, and Austin should do what I'm hoping for in the udder department, & there is plenty of milk behind him, so I'm happy

Anywho, it's a blubbering spray fest in that pen, so I couldn't even attempt good pics (not to mention the pen *really* needs raked, so pretend you don't see the mess ) but here's the pics I did get that weren't too blurry:

And, Tonka felt left out, so I snapped this one just before he licked the screen on my cell phone

Yea.... Well, Tonka IS a looker & he's my baby, so I'm a bit partial

He's shorter than Austin, and has oodles of width, which just makes Austin look more gawky, lol

But that's ok, I know Austin has width behind him...... His dam & sisters were just lovely, and there isn't an ugly udder to be found behind him, so I won't judge him too hard..... I also think he'll look better once he's had a bit of groceries in him.... Wish I could get a good rear shot of him...... His estucheon is as high as it can go, very open & wide, so I *really* hope he gives me a daughter out of Ginger

He is a handsome guy, in spite of those flappy growths on the side of his head. He needs to go see Tonka's stylist!

Seriously, he is gorgeous! (so is Tonka - I'm with Donna on that)

Tonka is still the handsomist though. Still love the Manchas best.

Thanks y'all, I'm happy to have him & really hope I can get a keeper doeling out of him....

Tonight though, I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry.....

Saw Austin standing in the barn this afternoon & he just looked "off". So I pulled up a chair & watched for a bit...

He adopted the "pee stance", saw just a tiny dribble..... Few drops really..... He looked like he was trying to go, but couldn't & I instantly felt ill...... Ran in to grab my goat meds & when I came out he was hunched & shivering (it was a cool 88°). He straightened out, but went & stood in the corner of the barn shivering....

Gave him Bo-Se, Fortified B, Banamine, baking soda & a drench of ammonium chloride (BTW-painful drenching a goat with scurs, I'm scraped & bruised all over!)

Walked him around a bit, offered him pecan leaves (which he turned down), then decided it was exam time.

Ever try to make a grown buck sit? Especially one whose last human capture included an episode with a wire saw to remove scurs, and ended with his neck sliced up (at previous home, from what I hear it was a brutal ordeal)..... Then I catch him twice..... Once to load him up for a 5 hour trip, and then when I caught him to stab him??

Wasn't pleasant. Pushed him into a corner, tied him. Git his front end up, secured him in a sitting position with ratchet straps & just as I've almost got him secure, hubby comes home & is bewildered by the sight....... Help is good though.

Tried to get his penis out & couldn't.... The goal of having him sitting was so it would just pop out, but even me trying to manipulate it wasn't working...... Reason? The whole opening was gooped shut!

With what, I have no idea.... Was dark, and kind of hard/tarry & had the hair matted up like a brick. Scrubbed it with dish soap, & rinsed twice, then resorted to using tiny scissors to cut what I could off & finally got it open........ After that I was able to get his penis fully extended, but couldn't find anything abnormal. No discoloration, lumps, bumps, puss.... Not even an abnormal smell (just smelled like buck)

Let him up, walk around a lil, offered him a tub of ACV/Honey water which he gobbled up......Called the vet, left a message & 10 minutes later, he finally peed!

I don't think I'm dealing with UC, but I'm treating him as if it's a possibility & I'm going out at 3am ish for another AC drench....

After he peed, I sat out & watched him...... 20 minutes later he starts nibbling the hay & by the time I left he looked perkier & was talking to the girls again....

So what is going on? The shivering, lethargic behavior? The goop? I can't tell you how happy I am that he peed, but I wish I knew what started all this?

His old home he just ate haygrazer & All Stock..... He's not sure about the alfalfa pellets I offered him, but until I know what's going on with him, he's just on hay, alfalfa pellets & scheduled AC drenches...

Scared me to death, too. I'm hoping you caught whatever it was. Check his temp again in the night.

Maybe he was just kinked up inside because he couldn't extend and it hurt?

I'm ready for us ALL to stop having goat adventures. Bring on BORING!

Glad you made it so he could pee. Gosh that would have scared me too. I wonder what caused it? Maybe your vet will have an idea?

That is a Beautiful Buck & you'll get some weight on him Crystal & he'll be as wide & healthy looking as Tonka who is beautiful as well.

I hope the gunk was the problem & not UC. I've had a buck with UC before & it was miserable for him & me but I pulled him through it after having the vet cut his pizzle off. Wouldn't wish UC on anyone!
If you drench him daily for awhile & get his diet to what it should be hopefully you won't ever have to worry about that. Thank Gosh you keep AC on hand.

Audra, I'm trying to avoid having the vet come out if at all possible, but he's aware of what's going on (he has no clue what the gunk is) & said to call if I want him to come out.

Katie, I'm SO thankful I have the AC on hand!! No one local carries it so I'd be in a bind if I didn't have it....

Alice, he's subdued this morning..... Looks depressed & is terrified of me No cookie bribes are going to make us friends right now........ Drenched again with the AC, gave him a 1/2 dose of banamine & another shot of B complex.... I think his head is hurting him..... He bumped it on the gate, squealed & hid in the barn..... Poor baby.

Oh, Crystal! So sorry to see this! Praying for your guy here! Hopefully he is just subdued because he is pouting since you were so "mean" to him yesterday.
