So...things just keep getting weirder.

DH and I were going over the goats with a fine tooth comb last night, as we sometimes do. When he asks, "Why do you keep staring at Cypress?"

I replied, "Because I look at that udder, and her overall frame, and something keeps niggling at me that says, "That goat is pregnant." Then, I think, "No pregnancy could have survived that HUGELY invasive surgery she had in May...and besides, it would have meant that she somehow managed to get to a buck (or vice versa) to get bred, at four months old, OUT of season, and THEN not abort from that surgery. " So I keep staring at her because my brain tells me that she seems pregnant, then my logical side tells me that it is just way too improbable."

DH looks thoughtful and then says, "We had a fence breach in April, that first time you were in Kansas, and Ash was in with the does for two days."

"WHAT?!?" I exclaim.

"Yeah," he says. "I didn't think much of it because, well, he was in with the Alpines, and they are seasonal breeders, and it was late spring, not fall. So it took me a couple of days to get everyone back where they belonged."

I got thoughtful, as I pondered it. I couldn't really blame him, because I might have done the same thing. One of the things I LIKE about my Alpines is that they are seasonal breeders, and that it generally takes some heavy hitting hormone therapy to get them to breed out-of-season. (CIDR protocol)

I sighed heavily. "I'll call Kim in the morning."

So now, Cypress is scheduled to come in Monday morning to get checked, and blood drawn. My vet doesn't have an ultrasound machine in her office, but we'll do an overall check, and I'll drop the blood off at Texas Med Diagnostics for a BioTracking test. If she is preggers, we'll have the ultrasound lady come in to see how many are in there, and what size....

Kim is as shocked at the improbability as I am. "If she didn't slough off from that surgery, I might start believing in Acts of God."

"I dunno, Kim, that's an awfully big udder for a 7 month old. It COULD be a precocious udder; she is from some strong milking lines...but, I dunno. It's niggling at me. Probably better to KNOW that to be calling you at 2 a.m. with a stuck kid and a screaming doe."

Kim says, "Well, she is good sized with wide hips....might be okay...but come in Monday, and we'll see. We'll weigh her too."

~sighs~ Goats.

With your luck this year, she Pregnant! She'll do fine though. It won't be the first time anyone's goat surprised us with an unplanned pregnancy & it sounds like you have an excellent vet so your going to have beautiful babies with pictures to share before any of us have ours bred this year!

Monkey was bred at that age by accident so don't feel to bad. It's amazing what these little goats can Ho through.

Sabrina delivered her 1st kids at 7 1/2 months old...... She was pretty stunted (I didn't get her until her 3rd kidding) but she also wasn't raised on cocci prevention & such....

She survived, had no complications

Hope the vet visit goes well!

*Am I supposed to hope for kids (tiny, healthy ones of course who will come into the world with no drama), or am I suposed to be rooting for a negative pregnancy test?? Must know before I cross my fingers & hope for you *

~ponders~ Root for twin doelings. Ash's lines plus Cypress would be AWESOME. Cypress is a Jobi Brightly granddaughter and Ash is a Soldier Mountain Italian Ice grandson.

I'd even keep a buck out of that pairing. Just please God, NOT a singleton buckling! ANYTHING but a singleton buckling!

Thought I'd give udder pics. Actually, have a LOT of pics, but that is for two new threads. This is my 7 1/2 month old doeling, Cypress's, udder TODAY, as of one hour ago:

So...went to the vet this morning. I would normally draw my own blood, but I wanted my vet to look Cypress over, get an accurate weight on her, just a general look-see on her condition and health.

DH got a VERY big head over that visit.

"Oh my, she is so PRETTY!"
"What great condition that goat is in, and her coat is wonderful!"
"Wow, she is only 8 months old? She is SO well grown out!"
"Whatever you are doing with your goats, keep doing it, she looks terrific!"

Etc., etc. My vet office has two working vets, plus the vet techs...and everyone had to comment. Then the older vet, Dr. Floyd, looked at her and said, "You know, she DOES look pregnant...."

Well, we'll know tomorrow. I dropped the blood off at our local lab, and they will e-mail me with the results tomorrow.

Well, at least both of my vets think our management practices are good!

Oh, and Cypress was a perfect angel in the vet's office. Stopped to pee and poo before she went in. They had a couple of emergency cases, and DH agreed that they should go first, so it was a long wait. During that point, she nosed around, then flagged her tail to say she needed another potty break. Back outside to pee and poo again. Then inside, where she attempted to help do some filing, but otherwise led perfectly on the leash and was just a doll. One of the vet techs asked, "You TRAIN your goats to act like this, how do you DO that?"

To which DH replied, "Just like with a dog; spend time with them. Now, I don't think someone with 30 or 100 goats could have all of their goats acting like this, but we have a small herd, never more that 20, so we can take the time necessary to make sure they are tame and leash trained."

Anyway, the vets and vet techs agree with my assessment, that she does, indeed, look and feel pregnant. And it was a nice ego boost to have them amazed and awed at how healthy and conditioned she is. They were told that she IS representative of our herd...and in fact, her coat is probably the roughest, as she had recent issues with barberpole worms.

Yeah, I hope they do that test EARLY.... ~sighs~ It will be me, checking my e-mail every 3 minutes...and they finally send me the e-mail at, like, 4:55 p.m. or something.

Then, no matter the results, I'll probably die on the spot from a heart attack at just GETTING them.

THUNK. Faints from getting the results and the sheer joy of knowing the answer before she completes her post.

~giggles~ Exactly that, Betsy! Then people will be calling me, "Are you okay? We got a half a post! Should we call the paramedics for you? And....

WHAT WERE THE FREAKING RESULTS?!?"

Tomorrow? We have to wait? Couldn't they have run right then when you dropped it off? I mean who cares if they have other tests to run, you have a whole forum of people waiting on this test. You did tell them there were a lot people waiting didn't you? And that we have been waiting all weekend already? Since I no longer have my goats, I have to live vicariously through you all and I wanna know now! *whines*
