boer goat hair shaving

What and where is the hair on the legs of the boer goats to be trimmed and not trimmed?

We got marked down at the fair last year and I still don't know the answer to this question.

I need to figure out how far down the front and rear legs a person should shave them with clippers. thanks, MODAY

To the knees I believe but Nancy or Mpete will be able to answere better. Ladies? When shaved properly they look sort of peg leged, the shaving should be blended well with the untrimmed hair.

The "idea" is to make the leg look as big as possible, and then trim the hair at the feet. I will usually not shave the legs, but just trim the "scruffies" off. Also, leave enough hair on the body of the goat so that when you are blow-drying him off, you can "back blow" to make him look poofier. Make sure you have a good foot trim done, because when you trim the hair, it will show.

Now I say this as a novice shower---- I just started showing, and I only have breeding stock, but I have watched and "hopefully" am learning correctly from other people who do 4-H and have shown for years....

At our shows you leave the hair below the knees and hocks and a tuft on the tip of the tail. Make sure you use scissors and trim the hair right where the good meets the leg.

This is why I love dairy goats. Shave from head to to tail leaving a tip. No washing, blowing drying. Just wipe down with baby wipes.

The ladies up there gave you good advice. Good luck in the show.
