Tatoo'ing versus Micro Chip?

Do any of you micro chip rather than tatoo your kids? I understand you then have to have your own reader if going to shows but if not going to shows a reader is not really a necessity.

Just trying to weigh the Pro's & con's & which is actually better?

I thought you had to tattoo for registration. No?

MDGA I know for sure & I think a couple other registries are now letting the breeder just Micro chip & not tatoo, leaving it up to Breeders choice because I just talked to MDGA about it since we are getting the new registered babies.

The breeder for the 2 doelings is going to show me how to Micro chip them, that's all she uses. Some of her show goats also have a tatoo because I guess there is 1 show she goes to I think it's in Iowa that's a national with all different breeds of goats & at that show they require a tatoo but the other shows she goes to can just be micro chipped.

ADGA doesn't do microchips.

http://www.adga.org/index.php?option...ation-services
Electronic Identification Devices: The Board of Directors has approved the use of electronic identification devices as a supplemental form of identification. This includes Microchips and any other similar form of ID. If your animal is micro chipped or has other electronic identification, it must also be tattooed. Both forms of identification must be stated and will show on the Registration Certificate.

I've chipped many a dog, it's no more difficult than giving a sub-q shot with a BIG needle. Can't say about showing, though. I guess that would be a question for ADGA or some other registry.

I'd rather tattoo than microchip. First, chips are expensive. Readers are VERY expensive. Tattoos you can read with no equipment, are easily visible, cheap, and easy to do.
Pony and tinknal like this.

She prefers the Micro Chip & MDGA uses them so I told her it would be fine. She is going to make sure they have their tattoo numbers on their papers too in case I need them later.

I haven't quite made up my mind which way I want to go yet & haven't bought the equipment for either & wanted to hear which one some of you prefer & why.

I have microchipped several of my goats in addition to tattooing. I stopped this year because last year when I had my annual Scrapie Inspection we couldn't find the chips in a couple of the animals, even though I had verified them previously.

I don't like the chips b/c they can adversely affect some animals. A friend's horse had quite a problem after they chipped it - some kind of nerve damage.

Meh. I like the "analog" versions of most everything. Less can go wrong.
