Basil Update - good news
HE IS CHEWING CUD! I have NEVER been so happy to see a goat chewing their cud before. His temp is down to 101.1 and I checked against another doe who is 101.6 which for a morning temp in the cool of the barn ain't bad, plus he is standing in front of a fan to keep flies off him.
I am waiting to see if I need to drench him again tonight, pray he drinks enough today so I don't have to. But so far it looks like we may have actually turned a corner with him. He is actually eating hay by the mouthful and today when I put him on the milk stand he actually was interested and happy to eat some grain. If we can keep him on the road to recovery then our biggest hurdle will be getting weight back on him. Oh yes and his poop is getting more solid by the day, he is still having just big ole' logs (sorry for the TMI) but I am hoping in a couple of days it heads more to pellets.
Guys he is actually starting to look like his old normal self, I thought I was going to loose him on Saturday and yesterday when I got word he went down a bit again I was ready to just cry. But last night him actually eating big mouthfuls of hay and again today I feel like maybe we made it through the very worst. I couldn't have done it without you guys cheering me on so THANK YOU! .

Our handsome hero
Basil had clumpy pellets today . He was on the milk stand while I did my daily milking and he ate for most of the time. His temp is 103 as of 4:30pm which is what I feel comfortable calling normal with a warm day. He is drinking water PRAISE GOD and yesterday and today I haven't had to drench him once. Guys I think we might be just out of the woods now .
The biggest step now is getting some weight on his bony arse. I am thinking of bolusing him again because he still looks copper deficient in spite of me dosing him a few months ago. Also thinking of going ahead and giving him his BOSE booster like I normally do for all the bucks before breeding season. I figure it can't hurt him giving it 2-3 weeks early and it might give him a bigger boost on the road to recovery.
I am still holding my breath waiting for something bad to happen but today when I saw his clumpy pellets I almost cried . I was so happy to see what a difference even a day made in his poop and seeing that means he is getting more healthy.

Guys I think we can officially say Basil is on the mend and we kicked whatever he had . He is eating his food with gusto, no fever for the past 4 days, talks to me ALL the time now and just seems like a happy boy. Granted he is still the skinniest thing on my place but we will fatten him up soon.
I have breathed the biggest sigh of relief seeing him get so much better. I just thought I would let y'all know how he was doing . I think I spoiled him giving him so much attention because now he doesn't want to be left alone, he will survive though. He does get to come out every morning and eat grain on the milk stand (something he can't wait for). I feel like I am looking at a totally different buck versus a week ago. He has life in his eyes again and that sunken unhealthy look is gone, like I said he is skinny but it isn't that sickly skinny.
Thank you so much for being my cheer team and my support. I have to give a shout out to my mom because she helped me out so much with the milking and chores. Between the hours spent nursing Basil back to health and my work just the regular milking duties and other chores seemed like a monumental task. So it was also my mom who helped nurse him back in a way because she stepped up and helped me so I was able to nurse Basil.

W00T! That's great news!
And for your Mom-- remember that no soldier goes into battle without 5 people as support personnel. Support people are IMPORTANT.

Such Great news Justine! I'm sure your Mom wouldn't have it any other way cause Mom's are great about always helping out & they Love it, she knows even though your grown you still need her sometimes.
Basil's a lucky boy to have you both. Looking forward to pictures when he puts some weight back on & ready for breeding his girls!
