NEED MATH HELP -Di-Methox

Jubilee is having the runs now. I found a package of Di-Methox powder. How in the world do you mix just enough of the powder to treat ONE kid that only weighs 25 pounds??

I believe it's one (107 gram) packet mixed with 3 cups of water. You keep it in the fridge and toss what is left over after the treatment. 1cc per 5 lbs on day one. 1 cc per 10 lbs for days 2 through 5. Repeat in 3 weeks and then again 3 weeks later

I was really trying to avoid using a whole package for one tiny doeling, but hey..... I guess that's not the way to look at it. I can't repeat the breeding that produced her.

Ok, lessee if I can handle math right now.

If you go to jefferslivestock.com and go to the packet, you can click 'view label info' it says that it is a salt form of sulfadimethoxine, and packet contents ends up being 94.6g sulfadimethoxine. Because the packet weighs 107g, this means that the other 12.4 g is weight from whatever is bonded to the sulfadimethoxine to form the salt form.

ANYWHO...

So if we do 94.6g/107g, we see that each g of the package contents contains 88% sulfadimethoxine - or the stuff we want to get IN the goat. That means we need to use 22% MORE of the powder by weight, to get that amount in the goat.

If it was straight sulfadimethoxine, we would weigh out .4g per 5lbs. (because we know the dosage of the 40% injectible. The 40% is equal to 400mg/ml. .4g = 400mg) But we want 22% more, so we multiply .4 x .22 = .088. .088 is how much MORE we need to give IN ADDITION TO the .4g. So, each kid should get .488g per 5lbs.

You can round to .49 or just go .5 probably with no issues.

Or, 1g per 10lbs would be an easier way to look at it.

I didn't do the math when I started using it, and I was doing .4g per 5lbs day 1, .4g per 10lbs days 2-5, and it worked fine.

Oh hey - packets of powder are on sale at jeffers - almost 2.00 cheaper than normal at 10.00 ea!

... Did I do my math well?

Well Susie told me once that it was 1cc mixed per 10lbs. I believe that is for prevention and not treatment if I remember. I am looking for her email now but you may just want to call her. I don't do math either but Susie made it real easy for me.

I'm not communicating. I won't want to mix the whole packet. I want to know how to mix small amounts. I'm sorry.

Alice...

My math is exactly what you're asking for - Mixing the powder as needed. When I'm talking about g, I'm talking about directly weighing out .5g of the powder per 5lbs of kid weight. I did the math to figure out the dosage.

I don't know if there's an 'easier' way to do it aside from using a gram scale and weighing it out.

Thanks Donna, I knew you'd be the one to do the math

I measured out Corid powder on a postal scale & it worked great, so I bet it would work well with the Di-methox powder.

Di-methox is hard to come by locally in anything but the powder, so it's good to know I can use it without mixing up the entire bag if needed
