Check out this feeder

Hay Saver Feeders for small herds

Pretty good if it works. I may have to try it out. My girls waste a lot of hay.

Picturing goat upside down in that with legs sticking out akimbo... maybe if it was mounted? Or free hanging might be even better. Cool idea though.

That is what i would do if i made it. Mounted under cover so the hay would not get wet.

I want a camel!

Oh...Feeder, right. I wouldn't use it unless it was mounted. Otherwise it looks pretty good. I especially like the area in the front where my babies would try to squeeze their fat selves into.

I think it looks like a great idea but I also think mounted would be much better for goats.

I have a couple pieces of 2 cattle panels we had to cut when re-doing the goat pens this summer so I may have to try that. Also have 2 of those plastic barrels & wasn't sure what we were going to do with them.

Thanks for sharing the idea.

andabigmac thank you for the giggle! I got a mental picture of my fat piggy babies squeezing themselves in the area. I needed a laugh today .

That being said I don't think the feeder would save much more on hay than any other feeder made with cattle panel (looks like what they used). Smart using a plastic drum for a feeder though...very smart .

I would have to modify it a bit but the wheel just started turning. I would need it to be waterproof so I am thinking about leaving the top and hulling out the middle and doing the cattle panel thing. I think you can even put a salt or goat block in the bottom infront of the hay.. hummm

It is so funny how things work out, you know?

I was mucking out the barn today wondering how I could keep all the hay off the ground and smashed into the mud and muck and went to the old house to get the feeder that we used to use when we only had two goats. I was sizing up old pallets wondering if I had the talent to do anything useful with them in regards to feeders-even went so far as to google "pallet hay feeders". I also stopped by a Southern States and a local hardware store looking for a few other metal feeders but didn't want to spend $30 on them!

Then tonight I was sweeping off the driveway and moving things around; a large cooler, some bags of soil, a large blue barrel that my MIL sent me home with from her late father's house-and thinking about the half dozen or so other ones at the old house-wondering if I could sell them in the upcoming moving sale.

Well problem solved. Thank you so much for posting this! I know what I am doing this weekend!!!! And I'm using this as my argument when SO says I spend too much time on the Internet!

I cut a cattle panel into 3 shorter sections (about 5 ft), then stood them up in a corner of the stall and pen. I should really take a pic. Its much the same idea, but goes from ground up to cattle panel height. Then I just put hay in the empty corner spot. It has saved me alot of hay since they stand in front of the panel and nibble. Not much hay gets walked on. The only drawback I've found is that with only two or four goats in each pen, if I fill it up to the top after a while the hay that never gets eaten on the bottom has to be cleaned out. Sure I could fill it less full each day.... But they do so love to stand up on thier hind legs and nibble the high stuff.
