Question about scurs that fall off

One of my boys had a scur that he messed with and it fell off yesterday. There was a bit of blood, but not gushing or anything. I got the Blue Kote spray (actually our store carried "Wound Kote") and sprayed the open wound. It was quite a chase to get a hold of him - he did not want me to mess with it (not that I blame him) It was not pleasant for him I know... probably a little traumatic. Last night when I went out to feed them and close them up for the night he wouldn't go near me at all. It was as if he was scared to death of me. I really hope he gets over this soon - I didn't like that part at all. Anyway, does it hurt when these fall out? Does that spray sting do you know? He and the other two head butt when they're playing and I'm sure this had alot to do with it falling off. How long is it sore (if it is?) Should I repeat the dosage today? Thank you very much.

He'll probably get over it in a couple of days.
I don't typically do anything when scurs get knocked off. I just watch it and treat only if it gets infected, which hardly ever happens.

I agree with April, he should be fine in a few days. Mine do this all the time.

We don't treat for scurs falling off either. If they're too big we have the vet remove them under general, but we don't treat them after that either. Our bucks and sometimes our does are constantly butting each other and ending up with bloody heads.

I leave them alone too. I only do anything if it's looking like it requires it.

When I bought my first goat she had been banded just before I took her home. We got to be friends, though not too quickly, but when her horn fell off she wouldn't come near me. I can still recall her hiding behind the out building at the old house and looking at me while blood running down her face missing that one horn. She was so pitiful!

I only have a couple with scurs but have noticed they must bump heads during the day; some will come up to the barn at night with blood where their horns were and twice I've seen the scur missing but the fresh meat showing. It looks like it really hurts but I just leave them be and so far we've had no issues.

I hope you guy feels better soon !

I had a buck that used to knock his scurs off about once or twice a year butted with his wethered buddy & have had a scur come off while trying to trim it on one of my does'. I'm sure it's not real pleasant for them & their heads seem tender but mine got over it very quickly.
I do also spray mine with Blue Kote & then just keep an eye on them to make sure flies don't get in them, etc.
He should be fine in a day or so.
Maybe try enticing him with his favorite treat like animal crackers, etc.

Thanks for the encouraging words. He was much better last night and actually jumped up on me for "kisses".
