Goat Sprinkler System
We have a doe. Her name is Morgan, and she's a Nigerian Dwarf. She's the sweetest little thing, and very quiet compared to our other ND's. She on the small side, and has never been especially robust. Since we have other, healthier and stronger does for milking, we had decided that Morgan would just live here as a pet and companion. She is the daughter of our best milker, but we don't consider her "breeding stock." Well, as many of you know, our plans are not always in accordance with their plans, and Morgan ended up giving birth to a single buckling in May. He was wethered and went with one of our other doelings to his new home earlier this week. Until he was weaned, we let Morgan nurse and raise him, and she was a good little mama. We let him have all of her milk. Well, when he left, we needed to milk her at least partially to relieve her full udder.
Here's where it gets funny. Morgan has two fish-tail teats (one of the major reasons we had decided not to breed her). Each split teat has two functioning orifices, and they all function very well. Each time I milk her, I can manage to get one opening aimed at the pail, but the other one shoots off in an entirely different direction. I come back to the house with my clothes soaked with milk. It's like I've been standing in a sprinkler that shoots milk everywhere. It's really quite comical. I've tried different positions and techniques, but the way she's put together, I don't think I can get everything going into the pail.
We still don't have plans to breed or milk her permanently. We're happy just to have her sweet personality as part of our little herd. It's really a shame, though. She's very well-behaved on the stand without ever being trained, and even without milking her out completely, she's giving about as much milk as our other FF. I just imagine the scene is quite funny with me standing there with milk streaming in all directions in the milk room.
