New baby-get ready for an overdose of cuteness!! - Goats

This little fella arrived today.....unexpectedly! We have one doe that is bred that is due next week. This doe, Missy, we recently purchased. We figured out she was bred when an udder started forming. We were not very happy about it as she has just turned a year old and we wanted her in better condition before breeding her.....but that didn't happen. From the size of her, I didn't think she would kid for another couple of months. Well, this afternoon this little guy was down in the field with her when we went down. Fortunately, he seems healthy, is nursing and doing fine......and fortunately, he was the only baby!! So, Mom seems okay too. Eating, drinking, pooping normal berries......but she is grinding her teeth some. Since this is our first kidding too, we don't know if that's normal. I know that's an indicator of pain, but she did just give birth. I have not taken her temp. as of yet, but can do so. She does not seem in any real distress. When we found them this afternoon, she was even browsing and trying to jump up for some leaves she couldn't reach. Would love to hear your thoughts.

He's a good size for an only child. Glad all went well. Sounds like maaa-a-am has it all under control!

Did you find the placenta? Just watch to make sure her discharge doesn't turn nasty (it'll really stink if she gets an infection) otherwise she should be fine. Cute baby

The placenta was down in the field,so she passed that.
Had a little discharge yesterday and last night, but seems better now as far as that goes.

Hoping the seller will contact us so we can find out the sire so we can register him.

OK, momma's poo has gone from normal goat berries to soft clumps. Thoughts? Not wanting to eat much this morning. Going out to take her temp. now.

Did you worm her yesterday? If not, do it now. That could be all it is. As long as she is eating, drinking and the poop doesn't get worse, she should be fine. My does usually have a day or 2 of "soft, clumpy" and then they are fine.

I've been wondering what you guys were up to since you haven't been posting so much. Cute little guy - is this the first birth on your farm? Congratulations!

we didn't worm her yesterday, were a little...frazzled with all that has been going on here.

We have Valbazen on hand, should that work?

This is indeed our first born animal on the farm.

Valbazen is only for tape worms, I think. You can use ivermectin or cydectin pour on, depending on what works best in your area. You should be able to get either at Tractor Supply Company since you probably won't find a feed store open today. I would talk to any goat friends you have made in the area and find out what is still working for them. There is a list of things you should do after a birth at fiascofarm.com.

Congrats on becoming goat grandparents!

I see that the label says that from looking it up just now, but I had always heard it was only effective on tapeworms. I would go ahead with it and the dosage is recommended at 1 ml per 10 lbs. Since you say she is small I might short that just a little and then do it again in 10 days. Was her temp normal?

Disclaimer - I have Nubians, not Boers so I'm not sure if meat goats are different. I also live in the hot humid south where worms grow rampantly, like every other kind of pest.

Wormloads can spike when goats are stressed, from birthing or being moved usually. Did you worm her when you brought her to your property? If not, you should probably check with whoever you got her from and see what wormer they were using and how recently she was wormed. If she hasn't been wormed recently, I would use the Valbazen for now, 10 ml per 10 lbs orally, repeat in 10 days. Then I would ask around in your area to see what wormer is working for other goat owners. If you wormed her with Valbazen when you brought her to your property, I would switch to something else now. If she were mine, I would worm with Cydectin pour on orally at 1cc per 25 lbs and repeat in 10 days. Cydectin is not fun to use, it smells and I imagine tastes awful and its purple so it stains, but it is what will for sure work as I have not seen any resistance being reported with Cydectin. Some people pull a little snow cone syrup into the syringe after the Cydectin is loaded so the sweet coats the tongue before the medicine goes down.

Its not the end of the world if you don't use any wormer right now until you get a chance to have a fecal done at your vet or ask around to see what others are using in your area. The baby is not huge yet so nursing is not going to take much out of her for a week or so. But you want to do something soon so her wormload doesn't get too heavy. Again, good reading at fiascofarm.com, although I am not as fond of herbal wormers as she is since I live in Florida.

Be sure to post some pictures on Tuesday when the baby discovers he has springs in his legs!
