The starts of "Fort Knox''. Pics

I am not taking any chances this year for oops babies. So we have start to try to build "Fort Knox'' for Johnny Goat (wether) and Big Red. Big Red is a rutting fool right now so it also helps that I can block him off to feed or water them. They HATE it but so far I am happy. Next step is fencing on the round pen. The girls do not go outside without me right by them and so far Carma is the only one who has tried to go visit them. So quickly got a leash put on and walked back to the back with me.

Please dont mind the project trucks in the back ground. But this is a couple days ago as we were walking back to the boys house. The reason Fort Knox started. He was blooping me.

He does not look like he approves of his new digs. Oh well!!!

You may need some machine gun turrets for the corners but otherwise it looks good to me. Big Red obviously doesn't agree. Its funny when the glare. Big, whiny babies.

Worked great until the herd queen went into heat last fall and OPENED THE GATE LATCH. Sigh. Needed a backup chain with a snaphook.

The good news is that it is the last time we'll be breeding her due to health reasons, and she gave me a lovely doeling this spring.

Other than that, we haven't had any issues.

I modeled mine after Yarrow's buck pen.

He hate it. He doesn't understand why he can't be with the girls and why stinky boy wont stay off him.

That would be our luck. I have two chains with hooks on it. After all is said and done if this doesnt keep oops babies from happening I give up lol

Best Latch Ever;
Find an old junk car, go down to your local junkyard or someplace and cut the seatbelts out. If you have wood posts, nail them down with washers, if you have metal ones, go to your local tack shop for a few rivets and use those to fasten the nylon around the post.

NOTHING without thumbs is getting in or out!

not to hijack the thread, are goats that crafty to require these measures?
I know nothing and am just trying to condition myself for what I can expect were I to one day have goats.

Yes. They are. One year I made the mistake of having the bucks next to the does with only one fence between. Three does who had NOT been turned in with a buck kidded. So much for my plans of "milking through."

As for the latches..... the one the doe opened had a handle that had to be lifted up and moved to the side before the gate opened.

If goats had thumbs, they'd rule the world. Wait a minute. That might be a GOOD idea.

I love the seatbelt idea. I am going to have to do some calling. Yes goats are that smart. I think the old saying "Where there's a will there's a way" came from goats.
