Something is wrong with Sissy

.when I went to do the milking, Sissy wasnt acting right. Shes stretching a lot , shes laying down a lot and didnt want to get on the milking stand ...just stood with her front feet on it , very still.. doesnt want her grain. I listened to her stomach and really didnt hear any rumbling. She went and laid down and is kind of grunting. Town is 50 miles away and its almost 10 pm. Does anyone have any ideas? I know something is wrong just dont know what to do.

Stretching a lot, standing with her front feet on the stand but not wanting to jump up, that all sounds like stomach pain. I would give C&D Antitoxin, Activated Charcoal mixed with cooking oil, and Banamine.
Has she been anywhere unusual today?? Any feed changes??

The above is what I'd do if she were mine. Assuming she is a full-sized dairy doe, I'd give her several teaspoons of activated charcoal in about three cups of cooking oil. C&D Antitoxin, 12 ccs on each side of her ribs, SQ, and another 12 ccs orally. Banamine 1-2 ccs per hundred lbs, IM. Also, you can give her active-culture yogurt, or probios.

I have to get to bed. Hope to see a good update when I log on tomorrow!

No nothing different . Unfortunately I dont have any of those medications on hand. She seemed fine this morning. I have some probiotic powder Ill try giving her that. A friend suggested ground ginger in water.

Not in bed yet. I'd try the probios and the ginger in a pinch. You can try slippery elm bark powder if you have it. Certainly stomach discomfort. Thinking good thoughts for you!
Even if she is better by morning, I'd get the other three things and keep them on hand for emergencies. It never fails that everythings closed when you really need something and those three items are real important for stomach issues. Make sure you keep the C&D Antitoxin in the fridge, otherwise its no good. You can keep the Banamine in the fridge too, it will greatly extend its shelf life.
Pony and Ranger like this.

Take her temp too. A drop in temp can indicate her rumen shutting down.

How is Sissy this morning??

Yes, C&D Antitoxin can be *very* hard to find. There are two feed stores in my area that have it and a couple vets, but they are all out at this time. Everyone wants to sell you the vaccine, when what you need is the antitoxin!

Activated Charcoal is usually best found at a health food store or online. The cheapest place I found, and I've ordered from them for many years now, is ameriherb.com
They also have good prices on bulk herbs, a few that I keep around for kidding time, like feverfew and red raspberry. Both "cut & sifted" as the goats will eat that right out of my hand.

So sorry for the loss of Sissy. We can become so bonded with our animals and they become such a part of us. When we lose them it is like a large part of our heart is gone. While it is painful now, trust that you did all that you can do and that down the road another goat will come along and the feeling will be just like Sissy sent her to you to take her place and to bring you a different goat joy. God Bless.
