Really happy with new doe

It will be 2 weeks this coming Saturday I brought home this 4 yo Sannen doe. She is very thin and had been nursing 2 fat kids until a week before I bought her. Owner said she was giving a quart once a day. I am feeding her all the Purina Noble goat feed that she will eat twice a day ( about 8 cups total). She milked about a cup on the day I brought her home and has increased every day since. Up to around 2 quarts a day on once a day milking. She was wormed 5 days before I bought her and I'm going to worm her again tomorrow. She is at least holding her own weight wise and today I even fancied that she may be gaining. I have a long driveway so the goats free range and eat whatever they want. Very lush here right now.

It sounds like you're doing great! You should post some pictures. Just for documentation purposes

My wife took some pictures of me milking her in my new home made scrap built zero dollar milking stand today. I'll get them up soon.

Aww poor baby, definately thin, but she has such a sweet face (love the free stand too!). Congrats on your new addition....

What did you deworm her with? I brought home a skinny one like that too..... Dewormed with Quest horse gel (1cc per 100lbs, 1 tube will last a while) & Zimectrin Gold (for tapes, 1cc per 30lbs, or you could use Valbazen 1cc per 10lbs). Hit with both wormers to cover everything, repeated 10 days later to catch anything that may have hatched & it made a HUGE difference.

Bit of beet pulp shreds & rice bran/BOSS top dressed on her grain and she packed on weight, while jumping production to a gallon a day (she came here milking barely 2 pints)..... She's been here about 6 weeks or so....

Little TLC, & all that lush grazing should have her in tip top shape in no time!

OK I feel really stupid but the first worming was with the stuff that starts with "a". Second dose will be with Zimectrin Gold,.

Hmmm..... Did you give it or previous home? I'm only coming up with one "A" word which is Albon.... A sulfa antibiotic that can also treat coccidia, and if you use that, it's a 5 day round to do any good.... But it's also 1am here and I could be missing lots of possible meds.

I always hit new arrivals with a "clear" dewormer for blood suckers like HC (Barber pole) & a "white" wormer for intestinal critters like tapeworms...... My "clears" are Quest, Ivermectin & Ivermectin Plus (which I only use the Ivermecton Plus once a year for liver flukes).... Mostly Quest (moxidecton, same drug in the cattle pour on "Cydectin") is my go to clear wormer because it's easy to administer, highly effective (some areas show parasites with resistance to Ivermectin... Still works here, but I have to use a higher dose) and the dose volume is small.

Safeguard, Zimectrin Gold & Valbazen are the "white" wormers in my cabinet, though I don't use Safeguard as I have to dose at 5x's the label dosage, for 5 days for it to be effective (according to my vets fecals), so Safeguard is just for the dogs now. I like the Zimectrin Gold because it's easy to give, but there isn't much in those tubes..... But so far I've only needed it for the 2 doses, 10 days apart, in newly purchased stock..... After that I just haven't had an issue with tapes to use it in my adults any other time. I keep Valbazen for my kids because it's easier to break down into smaller doses

She is very sweet looking & I'm sure you'll have her in tip top shape in no time! I agree with Crystal on a wormer choice like Quest, Cydectin or Ivermectin & I would worm her twice with 1 of those wormers at 10 days apart.

Albendazole. It was given by a vet.

Ok, that's the active ingredient in Valbazen Suposed to be pretty broad spectrum, but if she were mine, I'd still hit her with the Quest, and again in 10 days & call it good.... Do her inner eyelids have a good pink color?

Congrats she looks like a nice calm milker

What did the people say about letting her get in that shape? She is pretty emaciated. If she were mine I think I'd let her dry up so her body could recover faster/easier. She could really use the protein and calories she's putting out to recover some muscle tissue and condition.

Has she been tested for Johne's?

Oh, did she ever hit the jackpot when she went home with you - and the look on her face seems to be so knowing, like, "I found Goat Heaven!"

The previous owner was a sweet little 23 yo single mother. Her other goats (a dry doe, and this goat's 2 kids) were fat as ticks. She had her vet checked just before I bought her. He said she had a load of worms but otherwise in good health. She was feeding grain but this girl really doesn't eat much. She gets 4 cups twice a day and usually doesn't finish, but she is getting better. If it were closer to breeding time I would dry her up, but I figure I still have enough time to get some weight on. If she doesn't look better in a month I will dry her off.

Oh yea, there is a good chance you can get weight on her even if she's milking. I did with my doe.....beet pulp shreds & a high fat supplement (I used rice bran pellets, couldn't afford BOSS at the time) should help quite a bit in addition to another round of deworming. It's certainly worth trying, you just need to bump her fat/calories to support light milk production, in addition to weight gain....

I have an older Alpine doe who will milk herself skeletal..... She isn't one to eat a lot of grain, even though I let her eat her fill......When she starts looking boney, I only milk her out about 1/2 way each milking for about 2-3 weeks and then she'll start putting on a bit of weight again as production slacks off (I have another milker, so having this girl producing less for a while doesn't hurt us, and her lower production is about 3/4 of a gallon a day..). I've done this to her twice now & her production goes back up to normal after just 3-5 days of emptying her out again......

And, like you said, if it doesn't work, you can dry her off, get weight back on her before breeding & start fresh next lactation

Valbazen here won't touch the Haemonchus contortus, where I live. Which causes most of our goat worm related problems. I would hit her with Cydectin, Quest whatever you have that is Moxidectin plus Valbazen together. Copper her and get her some groceries. I would also check that knot on her jaw !!!

Good eye. Totally missed that knot when I first looked at the pics (probably dismissed it as cud).

Looks like she may have an abscess there, perhaps from a twig or something.

Yeah, that showed up after I brought her home. Whatever it is it has popped and scabbed over. Could be from the rodeo I had trying to catch her last week. She brushed up and didn't come out for an hour. She is funny about being caught, after she is caught she is fine leads well, runs up the ramp on her own, and milks reasonably well (except or the biting LOL) she gets seriously torqued off at the least little milking disruption, like when I switch hands or miss the bucket.

ohh it burst??

She reminds me so much of my old saanen I had, when I first got her she was skinny, then I made her chunky, then she got preggers, kidded, and was giving me a good 2 quarts once a day...but she still got skinny again though not that skinny so with you all taking her on bet she is going to love her new life.

It's a good thing she found you! She is very pretty and I'm sure will fill out quickly with all the browse!
I have to say that I would be concerned about that lump though. I would have it tested. It's probably nothing but if it is, you won't want her "leaking" it all over your property.
It's kinda close to the area for cl...but also close to where a sticker or something might have got her...or the rodeo.
