Sorta OT - Probiotics for people...
Wow, i am so clueless! Never knew they existed! What will they think of next!
I got a brown recluse bite a couple of weeks ago. The doc was more worried about the infection that wouldn't go away than the bite (been an interesting summer to say the least), so she put me on super strong antibiotics. Well, those started messing with my "rumen", so she told me to go get some probiotics.... I tried to talk her into letting me just use the stuff I have in the milking barn in the big tube, but she wouldn't hear of it and made me go to Walgreens and buy 20 pills for $30 ... Go figure.... I would rather have just used the stuff on hand and kept my $30.
ETA: now, if the $30 had been for goat medicine, I wouldn't have flinched! I went to TSC and spent that amount on dewormers three months ago! No one can tell me my priorities are mixed up!

we love probiotics at my house I keep a tub on hand for the goats as well. 20 pills for $30???!!! wow. that is crazy $$$. I love my health food store, they are cheaper than places like that and have better quality stuff. sorry to hear about the BR bite! yikes! I nearly got bitten by a black widow who had built her web in my tennis shoe. thankfully I saw her web before I put my toes in. I hope you heal well.

Or, if you need something more powerful, steal a cud.

That was the generic version. We don't have a health food store here, so I imagine the prices we pay on those things are higher since there isn't any competition!
Wow, scary! Glad you saw her before you put your foot in the shoe!

Just for kicks, can we get the name of your human probiotics? Or better yet, what cultures there are in there? Just curious to see how it stacks up against the ones for livestock, or readily available in kefir/yogurt.

I will look. The pharmacist told me they are all different. I just bought the cheapest one. It still was expensive.
ETA: It is Probiotic Blend 20 billion CFU's. Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Bifidobacterium Lactis

Another great way to get probiotics is to eat fermented veggies. Something as simple as shredding cabbage or carrots, adding a bit of whey from making cheese with your goat mik, and letting it ferment on your countertop for a few days will repopulate your belly with the good bacteria. And it's way cheaper than buying the stuff at the store!

I have never tried that, but have always wanted to. Is there anything in particular to watch for, and does the ratio of whey to veggies matter? Thanks.

My husband has been on two antibiotics for way over a year. He uses the "stuff in the big tube" from the vet that costs $9.

My dd and I have been in the hospital twice this year with the Staph infection your Dr is worried about. I brought dd in for a spider bite, and the Dr took one look at her and said, "I don't care about the spider bite! If we do not get that MRSA under control TODAY she's going to the Children's Hospital!" At that point they drew a blackline around her infection with strict order if it got bigger to take her in. Thankfully she responded.
About 4 months later she got it again in the same part of her leg. I got it internally and have just finished 3 courses of Bactrin.
This is a seriously nasty infection!!!! I take a $30 probiotic that contains 6 different strains. I still got thrush and had to break open the pill and mix with my fermented lemonade. I have yougurt, kefir, kimchi, fermented pickles, and fermented lemonade always on hand.
We have had to disinfect the entire house and everyone now washes all wounds with Hibiclens and our new body soap is Safeguard. Watch everyone in your household for red lumps, pustules, even zits.
Please know that I am not a germaphobe, in fact my background is in microbiology and nursing. I love my kids playing in the dirt and do not run around with a bottle of sanitizer....who could on a farm?! But, this has me very concerned. Just this week 3 of my friends on another forum have come down with it in their households. 2 their dh just woke up with a hot lump in their legs or arms. One has had multiple surgeries as a result.
Also, no one in my family is immunoe compromised and we have not had a course of antibiotics in over 7 years. So there was no misusing antiobiotics here and still it hit hard.
Take care of yourself!

Everyone else here has already covered it but milk kefir grains are a great source of probiotics. Also can make soft cheese or semi-hard cheese for variety.
The probiotics powder for your livestock is the same thing in the capsules at the pharmacy. I have taken the powder before. Just as I have taken the same DE that I give our livestock. Tried it stirred in water but not good. Used a lot though at one time. In orange juice actually tastes pretty good.
Not sure I would take the probiotics gel though. Drench is better than paste.

Scary stuff! Thank-you for the warning on this. I will definitely keep an eye on everyone and follow the doctor's instructions on the meds!

Thanks for the link, Shannon and the info on the probiotics, Davstep. I am off to browse that website now!

MRSA is recurrent too. My husband picked it up on his leg when his Mom was in the hospital two years ago. Of course, we had no idea what that small sore was at first, but it got so big and so deep so fast! He was on cipro, bactrim, doxycycline, and other things for months until it went away. Then when it go to the size of a pencil eraser, it suddenly reflared and came back. He's been on bactrim for almost two years this time with either cipro or doxy added many times if his stomach can handle it. It is just an unbelievable, nasty mess to get rid of. Silver or silvadene from the wound clinic will get it almost healed, then suddenly there is a relapse.
I know he says his poo has been water for the last 6 months even when he takes probiotics. He won't take colloidal silver orally for over two or three days because, (his words), "it tastes nasty". I do think that would kill it if he took it at high enough dosages for long enough though.

Has anyone here heard of grapefruit seed extract? It came up in a search I did for natural diverticulitis remedies. Anyway...this stuff seems to be pretty awesome. I was reading the reviews on it before I bought it (no one mentioned diverticulitis) and I thought what a great thing to have on hand. I have been using it this week for a cold that came on sunday night...it's almost gone 4 days later. My dh used it in the nebulizer for what seems to be bronchitis/chest congestion. Here is the link to what I bought and reviews NutriBiotic, GSE Liquid Concentrate, Grapefruit Seed Extract, 2 fl oz (59 ml) - iHerb.com . I noticed alot of their items are so much cheaper than other places I've looked at and shipping was lightning fast! AND you can get a $5.00 off coupon code with an internet search
