Going from all Saanens to Snubians?

Just thinking out loud here....

My Herd Sire, Ron, died 2 months ago. He was kicked by the cow and went fast. Now I need a new herd sire, but I can't find a Saanen. I have a Saanen doe that I mated to Ron and they had 100% Saanen babies. I currently have one of their bucks that I can't get rid of. I've tried Craigslist, 4-H and the Feed Store and no takers. I'm asking $30 for him and NOTHING.

So I'm thinking that if I can't give the bucklings away and since I can't find another Saanen buck, why not get another breed of goat for my sweet doe. So I found a beautiful Nubian buckling, with papers and from good breed lines. He's all brown.

I have two Snubians now and I just love the airplane ears. They have the sweetest dispositions and they just make me happy-my Sannens do too! I don't show the goats as I have them for pasture pets and for milk that I play cheesemaker with.

Any thoughts? Should I go with the Nubian buck or keep looking?

if he's worth his salt, oh yes, get him! I was looking for a nub. for my saanen girls and couldn't find one worth my time, and then louie, my new saanen buck, showed up so I got him. I would love me a great nub sire! the ears don't bother me one bit, who cares about the ears?? they make super milk, and have the best of both, butterfat and volume, and the crossbred vigor can't be beat! eat your baby buckling, and go get the other one!

and I think with one papered parent, you can get the babies papered, or at least tell buyers the sire has papers at least, you may find a better market for those babies.

I think you should do what makes you happy. Lots of people love their Snubians. Definitely keep the kids papered if you can.

BTW, KrisD, I have a few very nice Saanen bucks for sale - not at $30.00, but at least I am close to you....let me know if you are interested.

they can be registered as experiementals right? everyone has a idea of what they want, its your goats have fun with it. I personally keep breeds whole but thats my objective it to raise pure breds. I do like these two little doelings I have that are snubians, I love their moms genetics but they just are not for me.

Unless your buckling is very closely bred with your doe's lines there's no reason why you can't use him to breed her. Line breeding is a great way to keep good traits in your herd. After a couple of generations you need to cross out, but not at first. If your buckling is nice I'd use him.

Wish you were closer(are you in Texas?) - I have a nubian buck that I have to part with. Bob is salt and pepper black with white ears, a super sweet heart that cares for my bucklings and produces 90% beautiful doelings! I would love to find him a good home or lease him out. . .

Keep your buckling either intact or wethered as a friend for the Nubian buckling and pen them together away from the cow.

You can either use your buckling on the Snubian girls later on, use him on any new does you bring in, driveway breed him to others or wether him and just let him be the Nubian's friend. I would not worry about selling him before I got a new one.

My buck's friend is another buck and they get along pretty well. They do butt each other and such when a doe is presenting herself at the fence but other then that they are best buds.

Try Snubians and if you do not like them you can sell them.

It's a dairy buckling, so not worth it to eat him. And my kids don't like goat meat.

He would be breeding with his mom....isn't that bad?

No you will breed mom to the new Nubian buck and keep her buck kid for new does, upcoming Snubian kids and driveway breedings. Or wether him and make him the Nubian's friend.

I do not inbreed, yeah yeah I know if it works well it is called line breeding but if it goes badly it is inbreeding. I chose not to do it since I would rather not risk it.

You just have to justify getting a new buck and I have done that for you It is easy lol.

no its not bad, only in the human world is that bad, line breeding is how all the PURE stock was created in the first place, and there is plenty of meat on a dairy buckling to eat as well, if cooked right its awesome,

the problems anyone finds when they line breed are problems that were already in their stock to begin with, breeding related animals togather doesnt create defects it uncovers them, that is how you clean your gene pool, by removeing the problems as you find them and breeding best to best,
