Who gives the best milk?

Other than nigies, that is

Looking to add one full sized milker to our tiny herd so we will have enough milk for the family but being spoilt for choice, I thought I would come to you guys and ask who you think gives the tastiest milk?

Well I favor Lamanchas. The nubian milk we had was fine too though.

Can't really say as far as milk taste or production goes, but I would suggest Alpine. The don't get too big, aren't loud at all, are really well tempered, and, as far as I've heard and seen, give a decent amount of milk.

In our experience nubians tend to have the most dependably good milk without having to go to any special measures, but we haven't tried lamancha milk and would like to. Have tried all the other major large breeds.

Hope this thread doesn't turn into a catfight lol.

I agree, LaMancha milk is awesome. Plus, those tiny ears are just adorable.

I just dont know about those little ears, they really do look so very strange!

Is it lipase (sp?) that makes goats milk taste goaty?

I remember reading something about that but I cant remember now. Must be my fevered brain. Typical of me to get bronchitis in the summer and it has really mucked up my work schedule

Are LaMancha a high lipase milk goat? Or low? And Nubian's, as far as I can remember they are low produces of it but again, cant remember right now.

Think I shall stop now, seem to be rambling lol.

I had alpines at first. They were sweet, easy milking goats. I couldn't drink their milk. It tasted like goat to me. I have a saanen and I don't like her milk either but she gives enough milk to feed almost all of the bottle babies by herself and they don't seem to mind the taste. She is a sweet but kind of stand-offish goat. I don't have to chase her down or anything she just isn't an in your face and lap kind of goat. I have nubians now and they are divas (really funny and sweet divas). Their milk is fabulous. They eat the same as my saanen but their milk tastes a lot better. Not all of my nubians are loud and demanding but admittedly some are. I would love some lamanchas and plan to use every wicked wile I possess to get some one day.

My personal favorite goat is my crosses at the moment. Snubians impress me a lot. After the year I've had with my goats it seems like the crosses are the most b.s. free.

Well if you like the higher butterfat Nigerian milk probably Nubian or a mini breed would be the closest in butterfat and be fairly easy to come by.
Guernseys are also a butterfat breed but hard to find at this point but they have the closest milk to Nigerian we have found. We have a Guernsey doe who is on a 14-month extended lactation right now and still producing around 1 gallon per day or more. Our young buck was too young to breed her last Fall so milking her through.

Just get some higher producing Nigies. Right now my third are putting almost 6 quarts in the fridge everyday! All three are easy milkers as well.

If I hadn't become dairy-intolerant to all forms of dairy I'd be looking for a nubian-boer cross or a mini-mancha. The longer I milked our former goats the less I liked their milk, especially compared to our jersey-guernsey cow whose milk was about 30% butterfat.

Our toggenburg had the least drinkable - so strong! Great for cheese. Our saanen's milk got strong too our taste as well. The least objectionable was our alpine who had perhaps 8% nubian bred in for higher butterfat.

Go for butterfat. Taste before you buy.

Nubian/kiko is even better than nubian also but I don't know how easy that would be to find. We accidentally found this out by cross breeding.

Yes always always taste before you buy! We see it happen so many times where people become enamored of the first goats they go looking to buy. They get emotionally attached to the idea of the goats then when they get them home and they have stinky milk they usually just live with it and end up going to all kinds of extremes with milking/cooling/pasteurizing to try to get drinkable milk. I watched my sis go through that for years instead of just getting rid of the stinking bad milked goats and getting something that made good milk.

I find LaMancha milk to be comparable to Nubian milk. But with any goat, try her milk. I have ran in two LaManchas who's milk I didn't care for. But only two. The others have all been delicious.

I have one saanen, and one ober/saanen. her milk is my favorite. the obers I've had, had milk with as much cream on top as the nub's. and no noise! but obers can be hard to have, kidding issues can be tricky.

Any that is fresh beats the crap you buy in a box at the supermarket. I lost my milk contection a while back and bought at the store. I should have burnt my money and I would have been ahead.

mmmm good

Im milking 1 Alpine right now and her milk is fabulous. Its her first freshening and altho I dont have a scale I measure it in a measuring cup. Shes giving 5 pints and a tad each milking.Im floored with her amount. It tastes wonderful. I also have a first freshener Nubian but havent tried her milk yet cuz she has only been fresh for 4 days. It will be interesting to compare the two milks.
