I'm assuming the "nopes" are because it is such a new vaccine.... How long would it have to be on the market for you feel comfortable using it?

And if that is not the reason not to use it...what is the reason?

My vet said that one of the troubles with CL vaccines is that there are many slightly different varieties of coryne psuedotuberculosis. This means that the vaccine may create antibodies for some strains at a high level and other strains at a lower level. This is why it's effectiveness varies so. It may work well in some places but not in others.
I looked at the Jeffers site and it did not give the effectiveness level.
Do you know whether this one is more effective than the old ones?
If it is truly a better vaccine, I would use it.

As far as I know this is the first CL vaccine for goats...so I don't know what you mean about the "old one"

Yes, this is the first one specifically for goats. Some folks were using the sheep vaccine.

I'm not going to use it because I have no need to use it. No CL in my herd, and I don't show, and I am VERY careful who I buy bucks from.

As long as they don't come into contact with diseased goats at the McDonald's in Marshall, Texas, where we stop on our migration, they should never be exposed to it.

If I started showing, I would for sure. No vaccine is completely effective - there are different serotypes and varients of just about every single bacteria out there. All vaccines are designed to cover the most common types and species, but that doesn't cover all of them.

There are two main kinds of Coryne pseudtb. One that utelizes nitrate (nitrate pos) and one that doesn't utelize nitrate (Nitrate neg). Goats/sheep get the nitrate negative kind, and horses get the nitrate pos. Cows can have both. In theory, the vaccine would only protect from nitrate neg.

Anybody remember the company that developed this? I'd be willing to go ahead and compose an email to them asking for the results of studies done involving this vaccine.

The old vaccines were labelled for sheep. That's because to be designated for another animal, testing results for that animal have to be provided to FDA(?) Anyway, goats were such a small market that the manufacturers never wanted to go to the expense of meeting the regulations.
Doesn't mean that this vaccine is different- maybe it's the same vaccine just now is approved for goats as someone decided it was worthe the effort.
But it could be a new vaccine that is improved. The Jeffers site did not give enough info to know.

I would use it once it has been on the market awhile - I do not believe for a moment you can know you're CL free - most goats only have outbreaks when stressed, usually the only level of stress to bring it on is a move to a new herd as an adult. . .

I would use it in a heartbeat to give my girls and guys extra protection once I'm sure enough trials and feedback are out there.

Nope, my goats are not guinea pigs.

I also wonder why it is restricted in 22 states. They say on one website that they have conditional license, but not why. That does not give me the warm fuzzies.

Here MyGoat pepper them with questions:
