Buying property where there are goats now

I just posted this in "Poultry" but wanted to get some "Goats" input as well...

Property that we are considering buying already has chickens and goats on it. The seller said that they might leave the chickens (a dozen or so); the goats are a 4H project so they'll go. Should I have any concerns about the chickens that we might inherit? ...or the goats that are there now?

Thanks.

I would be jumping for joy if someone included free livestock with the purchase of the property. Even if you don't want them, you could sell them at the sale barn.

Yeah... ...it was in the middle of my jumping for joy... ...that I thought I would ask the question. I've never had chickens or goats before, but am planning to have both! :-)

Thanks for your reply.

I think chickens are the easiest keep, at least mine are. The only thing I would be really worried about is if the goats in the past have had CL or something else that can get my goats sick.

I agree with Donna. Can you get a good look at their goats to check for unusual scars and/or lumps?

Thanks. I don't know anything about "CL" but I did get a close look at the goats (there were 2) and they didn't have any noticable scars/lumps; they both seemed (visually) to be in good health.

I've seen different posts talking about "CL" but haven't done any research yet.

Thanks for your comments.

Please before you get goats read all you can about cl, cae, johnes and when you do buy please buy from someone who tests.
