Copper

How do you guys get copper into your goats?

We have sheep and goats, and cattle. I do feed a Dairy Ration at times when the goats are milking, feeding they kids. But the rest of the year my ladies are just on pasture and do well. My question is, I have 2 does that look scruffy at times, and dull hair. I want to get copper into these girls, but what is my best method. I know I could feed dairy ration all year, but seperating them from the sheep every day is a task and a half, I'm working on seperating them permanently just having them in their own pastures, but this is in progress. Any suggestions...

I have heard there is slow release capsules, but I can't find them!

Copasure boluses.
Copasure Bolus-12.5 gm Animax (Oral Medications - Miscellaneous)

Get empty gel caps, too.

Each adult goat on my place gets half a copasure bolus four times a year.

I just gave my little herd copper for the first time. I mushed it up with moistened Noble Feed Goat Chow (aka Goat Crack) and they each snarfed up their portion. The hard part was keeping the other goats at bay when I tried to give each specific goat their bowl of copper laden crack. Of course I attempted this when I was home along- would've been much easier with hubby there to run interference.

an old horse wormer tube/syringe with applesauce is what worked best for me. I just put it in the back of the mouth and squirted.

They sell pill popper thingies for dogs at pet smart. That's where I bought mine. It is a life (finger) saver.

I use a pull pusher that was originally for cattle aspirin. Works great. I just straddle the anima, grab their mouth and shove it in. Takes second per animal.

That looks good. I forget that not everyone has little goats, with shorter mouths. This gun would work better for a full size Nubian.

Yep, thats what I meant. Just make sure the one you get fits the plastic capsule. I made that mistake also.

We use a plastic balling gun, but I think the applesauce sounds like a good idea. Makre sure you read Lonestar's blog, she did a great job of explaining everything.

edited to add: We bolus for the first time at around 2 to 3 months old, once they are cudding good.
