Goat Help Needed

I posted previously saying my goat had diariaha and to deworm him be cause it was probably worms, well i don't drive yet and my mom has been to busy now. His diariah is getting bad. Is there anything i can do until later today or tomorrow morning to run and get a drench gun and cydectin?

If you have some Kayopectate or Peptobismal you can give him that and it will help. Hope he does ok.

Quest gel (for horses) also works if you can't find the cydectin, or if it's only available in the large sizes.

For just a few goats Quest will be more cost prohibative. You don't need a drenching gun, just a needleless syring or a human kids medicine syringe is what I use for wormers.

I hope your little guy does alright & makes it. Sounds like he should maybe be on coccidosis treatment or prevention as well. I'm sure you posted in another thread but I can't remember, how old is the little guy?

Hes 5 months old. He went to the vet last week and got pinched and got the CDT shot. Hes covered in diariah right now and i keep washing hit but. Lol i just gave him a pepto bismol chewable tab rolled in peanut butter and some grain. I feel really bad for him. Should i just rush him off to the vet or call the vet?

I don't know where you are, but sassafras limbs and leaves help with diarrhea if you can find some. Good luck!

I would stop his grain altogether while he has the diarrhea, Grass hay & fresh water only to eat. Get the liquid pepto bisbol or Kaopectate( they have an extra strength Kaopectate I'd get) & give him a couple tablespoonsfuls, if all you can get right now are the tablets, crush them up & get them in him that way. I wouldn't think it's be too hard since most goats like the peppermint flavor.

If he's never had coccidosis prevention I would start him on that right away & also get a dewormer that works like Quest or the Cydectin.

okay so do i have to start the coccidosis prevention through my vet and get the medication? And im planning on running to the store right after work tonight. I bought him the liquid pepto he didn't like it at all so i went back and bought the chewable tablets. There 230 mg each. Is that to much or to little? Ive never gave pepto to my goats before so its little confusing to me. I didnt feed him any grain this morning hes just eating hay but hes still having really bad diariah. Thanks for helping me!

If you haven't had him on coccidia prevention, that's most likely the problem. Normally, prevention treatment is started at three weeks. The meds are available over the counter at the feed store.

Here's a link to detailed info:
Different Cocci meds and doses\

PS It doesn't matter if they don't like the meds. Use a drench gun or a syringe body with the needle removed and give them the meds. You are the parent... uh, human.

You can get Sulmet from TSC or your local co-op already mixed.
Start him out at 2cc the first dose and then 1cc for the next 4 days.
It comes in a small container and will last forever.

He wont like this either but get it as far back in the side of his mouth as you can. You can get a syrenge at TSC to use. Keep it in a freezer bag in the fridge and only use it on this one goat then dispose of it when done.

On the pepto I have never given the tablets and have always used Kayopectate liquid and dosed it like I would for a 6/7 year old child.

I agree with Alice, wether he likes it or not when you need to give him medicine he'll just have to take it. Do it slowly though so he doesn't choke & give him time to swallow. I stand with them between my legs so I can hold him with my legs & I have hands fee to give the medicine.

Have any of them had cocci prevention? I would see about getting some Noble Goat at the feed store and feeding that since it will keep the adults from shedding cocci when the new ones are born and reduce the amount in the environment. I would still treat this boy with sulfadimethox.

I would just treat this buckling for coccidiosis too but KrisD has a great idea with getting the medicated feed for the rest of your adult goats.

I would use the treatment dosage from Alice's link above not the preventative dose for the cocci med's.

You don't inject it, you use the syringe to squirt it into his mouth

ETA And no, you don't have to water it down, that's for use in drinking water.

PS Don't have your mouth open... Goats can spit

Emily, I don't mean this harshly, but goats are subject to having problems that need to be dealt with QUICKLY, and this situation has been dragging on quite a while. You are lucky your goat isn't dead. (sorry, blunt, but true) I suggest you stock up on basic supplies and do some reading about preventing some of the more common issues. Cocci prevention is pretty standard.

The following website has a very complete list of meds to have on hand. Yes, many of us have a fridge shelf devoted to goat meds. Plus, we have a shelf in the milk house of the items that don't need refrigeration. Then, there's the corner of the human's bathroom cabinet that has goat meds in it.
