Goat milk soap and the dog

I made my first batch of goat milk soap a week ago. I have it sitting in a tub on the floor of the livingroom to cure. Yesterday while I was out, one of my dogs ate at least one bar of soap. Last night when I went out of the room, she grabbed another but didn't eat it. I came back in before she could.

Has anyone else had this happen? Did I screw something up and it smells like food to her?

It has no scents or dyes. Just plan 'ole soap.

That's weird but kind of funny. I hope its cured enough to not burn her belly or mouth. I can't imagine she's feeling very well today.

I made some last year that I sprinkled oatmeal on. It looked so delicious that when dh came home from work he cut himself a slab thinking it was candy. I walked in as it was headed for his mouth. I shouldn't have said anything and just let him take a bite so I could enjoy the show.

I don't think your soap needs to smell like food for your dog to eat. I personally don't think horse poop smells like food but my dogs sure do.
Eunice and Minelson like this.

You have a point on the horse poo. Not to mention chicken poo.

She seems fine today. As far as I can tell, it never made her feel ill at all. I thought she would throw up later but never did. She ate her dinner just fine. Of course she is a doberman. She would have to be really sick to not eat her dinner.

The other dog shows no interest in the soap so I guess the one is just extra weird.

That's kind of funny about your DH! It must have smelled really good too.

Only makes me chuckle because our basset won't stay clear of ANYTHING that has goat's milk in it - leave your coffee on the side table, forget it. I'm convinced if she was near them she'd be suckling in no time!
Glad she seems okay!
