What is this buckling doing?

My nubian buckling Sonny, he's 9 months old, did something weird today. I have my suspicion that it's not anything too bad but I just want to make sure. I took him to pasture, he was asking for pets so I'm petting him and he squats like a doe peeing and he's not peeing but he's not really doing much else either except a few squats. He stops, then he did it one other time while getting his head scratched. I'm thinking this might be "bucky" behavior but I've never had a buck before. He doesn't stink (yet), doesn't appear to be in rut or anything....but I realize that I'm pregnant so I might smell interesting and I'm pretty cautious around him for that reason.

The other thing I thought was maybe it's an early UC sign? Eh, I'm sure one of you has seen this before and probably knows what's up. Thanks in advance

I'll be interested to see what others think as I have my first buck too. He is only 3 1/2 months old but I know nothing about buck behavior. I did see him hunch the other day, just for a few seconds, then take off like nothing was wrong. My first thought was UC, but he's been fine. I think sometimes I read too much into their behavior, but we have to with these goats!

Sounds like to me he was being buck and trying to pee on his face but I have never had UC here so I dont know if they would do that.

Your smells don't equilibrate to goat smells... he won't be abnormally interested in you for the pregnancy... however, bucks are dangerous and I'd be careful around him.

The haunchy was him extending his penis. They'll mouth it or pee on their faces - or both. Sometimes they'll just extend it for no apparent reason. Perfectly normal for an intact buck.

When a buckling is born, his penis and urethral process (what is colloquially called his pizzle) are adhered to each other and to the inside of his prepuce (sheath). He does those squats to break things loose. Photo 4 in this PDF shows the pizzle still adhered to the penis.

This is copy-and-pasted from: Fertility and Sterility in the Buck
"A buck is born with his urethral process and glans penis adhered to the inside of his sheath (prepuce) by the frenulum membrane. This adhesion makes it impossible for the buck to copulate until testosterone (a steroid) and practice mounting frees penis from the prepuce. He will then be able to fully extend his penis and copulate."

lol...I wasn't sure. I figured it might be something "buck" related though. It was just weird that I've only seen him do it just then when I'm petting him. I'm pretty cautious around him, he's not all that big yet but I know he will be eventually. I'll up my level of caution knowing he's reaching that level of maturity though

my 4 month old buckling does that. It gets wicked fun when they figure out all these things, like, "Hey, I can totally drink my own urine. The does think it's sexy!" And then he'll stand there with his head high and upper lip quivering, while letting it all stick out and, ahem, humping the air. Violet and I just roll our eyes. Whatever, Mowermouth. Whatever.

I seriously have to wonder why more people don't turn off the TV and get into farming. It is far more entertaining.

Thank you Hopefully he'll free it up without intervention or injury

I totally think it's a bad idea to make pets out of bucks. He was wanting pets from you and then did the penis thing at you. So he thinks you're one of his does. That is just beyond gross As they come into rut some of them can get extremely forward with their behavior with what they consider their (human) does. BTW it's not just me, the wife feels the same way

Sounds like bucky behavior because he's growing up & is starting to think like the big boys.

If you ever suspect UC usually they will stretch will trying to urinate or you might think he's straining(like constipation) to poop.
Or they will paw with their back hooves at their belly.

I do make pets & Love on my bucks too but I always remember they are intact males. Dh is more standoffish than I am with any or all of our animals since it seems most of the male farm critters seem to go after him at 1 time or another. Me they don't bother.

he's not a pet, he's for breeding. He was a bottle baby so he's friendly. So what you are saying is no petting him. Got it. I'm learning

No that is only my opinion. For some reason most of the people on this board (the women anyway) do pet their bucks

Since he was a bottle baby please be especially alert with him, bottle fed bucks tend to have less respect for people than dam raised.

I have 2 full grown bucks that were bottle babies and get pets daily. I am always present when my kids are around them but if there was an emergency like they got out of the pen and I was away or unable to help I know my kids could get them back in and would not be the worse for wear. Now I did have a buck before that when it was my time of the month I could not go in his pen, only then any other time and he was wonderful and gentle. I saw the response that says human smells are not equal to goat smell, but there was something about my smell during that time of month and NOTHING could make me think otherwise.

My buck is petted, but I've never petted him on the head as I heard that could be a sign of dominance or aggression. He has only ever been petted on his back and sides. He is so gentle, even when in rut.
