Nanny Goat Song

I wrote a song as I was trying to get my brat goat on the stand this morning. It's sung to Garth Brooks' song "Rodeo". Garth Brooks - Rodeo - WITH LYRICS! Its dorky but so are my goats. And me too. It was this or kill her.

Her eyes are cold and stubborn
Her bag is hard and tight
And I’d give half of Texas
To fill this pail sometime tonight.
She knows her friends are in the pasture
She swears that's where she's gonna go
Well this ain't no lame-ole rodeo
But a danged-old nanny goat
Well it's teats and grain
It's kicks and pain
And that goat yells really loud
It's the foot in the bucket
And you’ll just have to chuck it
But she needs to be milked out
It’s laying down on the milk stand
Its teat dip in my face
It's the rope on the hock
And the kick like a rock
And they call the thing nanny goat
I do my best to hold her
And try hard to be kind
‘Cuz her head is in the stanchion
And she’ll break her stupid spine
And it's "Easy girl, I'm not trying to kill ya."
And that is MOSTLY true
You know I really like your bloodlines
And that’s all that’s saving you!
Well, it's a milky mess
And a second guess
You know they sell this stuff at the store
It's the dent in the bucket
It’s the cuss in the @#$% it
Don’t want to do this anymore!!!!
It's tears and hate
‘Cuz she’s a waste of hay
Wait, she’s starting to calm down
It's a tentative squeeze
And disbelief
There’s my sweet ole nanny goat!
It'll drive a milk maid crazy
It'll drive her man to drink
And I’ll sell off everything I own
Cuz I need one more goat, I think
Despite a broken gate and my man’s irate
Look at all I have to show
For all the years that I’ve spent chasin'
This dream they call nanny goat
Well, it's milk and cream
It's chevre cheese
It's pudding in a bowl
It's a big white cheddar
And some Parm in the shredder
and that cajeta sure will flow
It's ears that flop
It's kids that romp
It's wet doelings on the ground
It's the “Pet me first!”
And successful births
And they call the thing nanny goat
It's the soul in their eyes
It's the never ending surprise
And I call them my nanny goats
Pony, Steph in MT, Eunice and 13 others like this.

And Nick says that I have to admit that I got a bit choked up when I was reading/singing it.

Now we need to get a GB mimic to sing it for UTube. It should go viral in seconds!

And I will be singing it to my stuborn goat as I tie her to the rafters to keep her out of the milk bucket.

Wow! Just, WOW! You are goooood. I don't know the tune (I'm not a country music fan) but the poetry is fantastic.

The YouTube suggestion is right on too.

Wow. Thanks everyone. I'm pretty shy about sharing my writing. I thought you all might appreciate it though. Most people don't get my sense of humor.

I'm trying milk sharing with my doe that freshened last week. She had a single and I don't want to bottle feed just one. I haven't been separating the baby, I just go out and take what I can get. She hasn't wanted any part of it for the last few days. I was laughing at myself as I wrote it because I was making all sorts of threats to her (I'll take your baby away/sell you/butcher you, etc) but when she calmed down I was fawning all over her. Its like having a baby. You forget all about the pain when you reach your goal. She was better this morning.

I had to look Bravo Zulu up. That would be a great goat name...

I listen to lots of reggae and just sung it to a ragga beat. Works just as well. LOVE IT LOL

Good to know I am not alone in my making up songs as the day goes along. It irritates my wife to no end. We are partners in a small music studio in Kingston Jamaica so I tell her its just work. She says it might help me get work done but people who sing for "work" actually have good voices........ Hey the goats seem to like it......

I am a terrible singer. Cats answer. All of my goats have their own song that I've re-written.
Tammy has Stand on Your Stand (Stand by Your Man)
Loretta has Fist City (She's the one I wrote this song for).
Pickles has a lullaby that my dad sang to me called Daddy's Little Girl but its Mommy's Little Girl for her.
Tilly has Fat Bottom Goat (Fat Bottom Girls)

Dh came out while I was milking last year and after the second goat he commented that I sing different songs for them. He then asked what song I sing for Tilly. I started singing it and she lifted her head up and called back to me. Pickles did the same thing. It was cute.

I have 4 more new goats to milk this year. I'd better get on it...

I would LOVE to hear that sung to a ragga beat!

By the way, my voice stinks but my goats still seem to love it. That's one of the coolest things about goats (and sheep, too): they aren't critics.
