Lost a kid... what just happened?

I just lost a little buckling and can't figure out why. Any input would be appreciated. Here are the details.

Born 4/7, so 27 days old. Just finished first round of Corid. No vaccinations yet - that was due to happen this weekend.

He didn't want to eat at 3ish this afternoon. He had a couple of sucks on the lambar and then wandered off. His belly wasn't empty, but it wasn't tight full or anything. Around 5ish I went out to check on him and he was lethargic - standing, but not wanting to walk anywhere and definitely not playing. No diarrhea, peeing normally. His poop was sort of greenish and clumpy. Not berries, but definitely not loose or watery. I brought him inside and gave him a drench of baking soda. I thought entero, but was totally out of anti-toxin. (Shame on me.) I ran into town and hit all three feed/farm stores, but no one had any. When I got back he was going downhill fast. He was walking unsteadily, falling a lot and running into walls. He had a bit of clear nasal drainage and was obviously not swallowing because his chin was wet with drool. His temp was 105. I was thinking listeria or polio, so I gave him oxytet, BoSe and a fortified B with about 100mg of thiamine. He gradually lost control of all muscles, then started convulsing and finally died around 9pm. Poor little fella.

I'm thinking I should have used penicillin instead of oxytet. I was totally panicking and couldn't get a diagnosis figured out.. and then ashamed of myself for panicking. I really couldn't justify an after hours emergency vet farm visit for a buckling, as guilty as that made me feel.

Anyone have any ideas as to what can kill that fast?

Boy, I sure don't think so. He didn't really nibble on much and all the kids are in the same pen that I always keep kids in. I haven't noticed anything odd growing up there. Everyone else is perfectly fine. I hadn't thought of poisoning.

I am sorry about your little guy. It is never easy to loose one and even harder when you don't know why. Please don't beat yourself up about it. Sounds like you did what you could!

I'd go with your first thought.. Entro.. (it could have been something else with the slight temp & drooling.. but that can also be the body shutting down).. I lost a kid several years back (buckling..just about the same age).. same symptoms you describe.. I'm sure his was entro.. I actually had anti-toxin.. gave it to him and still lost him.. (I honestly don't think I gave enough)... so don't be hard on yourself.. just order a bottle & keep it in the fridge (and if you are like me.. as long as you have a bottle available.. you'll never have any need for it !!! run out of something and BAM.. that's exactly what you needed)

sorry you lost him

I wouldn't know what I was looking for if I did do a necropsy.

Should I go ahead and vaccinate the others, or should I get everyone with a dose of anti-toxin first just in case - assuming I can find some? Everyone seems hale and hearty this morning.

April... he was probably just the UNLUCKY guy..everyone else will be fine, no matter what you do/don't do.. if you vaccinate, then go ahead with your usual CD&T (we no longer vaccinate.. we did for years and actually seemed to have MORE issues with entro.. back then. I now keep a couple bottles of Antitoxin on hand.. knock on wood, I haven't needed to use any in over 3 years.. but I buy a new bottle every year before kidding season starts) I then find someone who I think needs to have a bottle on hand (but can't afford it)...I gift them with my unopened bottle when my new one arrives... I've never found any antitoxin for sale (except on bottle in Willow Springs, that I bought on my way to Emily's when her goats go sick)... I order from Jeffer's or Valley Vet.
