Snowbelle's mastitis test results.

This is the pertinent sentence in the email from the LSU Mastitis Clinic in reference to the cultured specimen.

Snowbelle had a Arcanobacterium pyogenes which is unresponsive to treatment - any form of treatment.

Did a google search on it and came across a letter to the editor at CDC which says it transmitable to humans.
Arcanobacterium pyogenes Sepsis in Farmer, Brazil - Vol. 15 No. 7 - July 2009 - Emerging Infectious Disease journal - CDC

Oh, yes. That is clear.

A. haemoly´ticus causes human infection that is manifested in adolescents as pharyngitis and a scarlatiniform rash similar to those of streptococcal infection.

I'm so sorry. Praying for you as you go through this.
One of the things I always remember when we have to do something like this, is that DH and I do our best to make life heaven on earth for the animals while they are with us. I'm sure you do the same, from your loving posts. (((hugs))) She will go gently to sleep loving you.

Worse and worse. A little more research led to this in the Merck manual.

The bacterium is present in the nasopharynx of many normal cows and in abscesses. It is not normally present, even as a contaminant, in fetuses or fetal membranes, and isolation is almost always significant. It gains entry to the bloodstream and causes an endometritis and placentitis, which is diffuse with a reddish brown to brown color. The fetus is usually autolyzed, with fibrinous pericarditis, pleuritis, or peritonitis possible.

I too, am sorry that you're going through this Alice. From your last post, it seems that the bacteria isn't usually found in fetal tissues, but when it is it's pretty devastating? Is there any reason to believe the kids have been infected? I'm hoping desperately that the kids will be healthy when they arrive.

I, too, pray that they are not only healthy but that you are blessed with a beautiful doeling that will fill the space in your heart! This has been such a season to remember.

The does that I kept from the doe we lost fill my heart with joy everyday! They are beautiful improvements over their dam and I enjoy them very much!

This was NOT one of my days of JOY, however....

Just talked to Dr. Mueller about the statements in the Merck Manual. He thinks that if we induce and the placenta appears normal, that the kids can/should be safe to keep.

Looking at this possibility now.

I'm glad you have a good vet. Just having the "nod of approval" on decisions is a kind of comfort. I'm sorry you have to go through this.
