Going to lose my Snowbelle

I have a Saanen/LaMancha cross who is pregnant with her second set of kids, due on May 15. She is a HUGE goat, but serenely calm and my favorite.

Here is Snowbelle's udder last summer as a first freshener. She very easily produced over a gallon every day.

Last fall, she had an teat injury that I never mentioned on this board because it was so awful treating her. She was incredibly ill. One of these days, I'll blog that part of my goat life with the pictures that document it, but it's pretty bad. Her left teat died and turned black and eventually was removed.

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to put her down after she kids. That side of her udder has problems that I've explained in the following blog post.

Quirky Goat Farm

I'm going to love her like crazy for the next two weeks.

Oh my gosh I'm so sorry to hear that. She is such a beautiful girl and has such a sweet face. That is such a shame. Wish there was an alternative, but I know you and you have above and beyond what anyone else would be able to do. She was a lucky girl to get the privilege to live in your herd with you as her mom. Big hugs! So sorry for you having to loose her.

Alice if you don't feel like answering this it's fine but why doe the vet feel that the bacteria are contagious to the others if she was bitten by a spider?

We saved her from the spider bite, and she (and her udder) looked fine from December to about mid April. There is an orifice left where the teat used to be, and it is down in the dirt every time she lies down. She got some sort of bacteria up in there. Her udder was looking great and pre-kidding plump, but then the lumps started to develop. I figured we were in trouble when that happened.

I'm still waiting to hear from LSU's Mastitis Clinic about what bacteria it is.

I'm so very sorry... It's so great that you have some time to love on her before she goes. Even though it hurts so much just to look at her hurt, joy, hurt, joy....I wish I could help. Prayers and ((((hugs)))

My heart hurts for you- to have such a lovely animal and know where it is going. That's hard hard hard.
I hope that you might be able to find an answer even though it appears so desperate.

Hugs to you Alice! I am so sorry you have to go through this now too on top of everything else you've been through lately. It sucks to have to make such a hard decision even when you know it's better for the doe & the others you have, it still doesn't make it any easier.
