viability of a goat fetus
I am on another thread and the OP is stating the doe kidded out "2 weeks early" ... breed date was 12-24. Well, even with leap year that means due date would be May 22, that puts actual date of birth at day 129 gestation. Everything I have ever heard and did research on states that a fetus born before 10 days of due date will not survive.... The kids weigh in at 4.8 lbs ea, and appear "normal" ... they are playing and acting normal... So do you have any facts?

It has been my experience that goats can't read and a lot of stuff written will be ignored by them.....

Our Gogurt was close to two weeks early and we seen the breeding and she was born with no teeth so we knew she was preemie. Now we fought like crazy to keep her alive but happy to say she is one of our biggest girls we own.

We had one just like yours this winter. Had to tube him for days before he figured out how to suck. He made it and is doing great.

Did they have teeth and were they able to suckle immediately? Those would be the factors I would look at. If yes to both, wrong due date. JMO

ok, you say "close to 2 weeks early" .... but this breeding would have been 19 days early... close to 3 weeks... and these kids were born healthy... running, breathing, they have teeth... fluffy normal hair, etc.

If they have teeth, then they were born on time, NOT preemie. Take in the fact that does can take up to a week to settle, and you have kids born just about right for a doe bred on the cycle before the one they marked.
2 weeks preemie takes WORK to keep alive. If they are having no troubles, they are not 2 weeks premature.

No no teeth what so ever. Barely any hair she sort of looked like a piglet. She was around 12 days early. She was not running around for a long time.

Thank you.
This is what I had found doing my reasearch.
I am not going to make a big deal about it, but I just could not see how something almost 3 weeks premie could have survived and thrived

Looking back I have no clue how she made it either. From what I have researched she shouldn't of made it. I will see if mom has any photos on her new computer of her and if she does I will post them here.
