Flying sperm!

So, all kidding aside, can a buck get a doe preggers THROUGH a fence?

I am within days of building a new side by side pen for our buck and two does but I want babies when I want babies, not when they do.

Will I need to build a solid wall between them or a walk way between pens?

With wire costs and fence posts, I sure hope flying sperm is a myth!

I've heard people claim it to happen but it's never happened to me when I did it that way.

That said I moved my buck pen to not within sight of the does and it is really much better setup.

There are times when "Where there's a will, there's a way" really does apply. You will hear from people who have had does end up pregnant when there's no other explanation. If you want to be certain, I would have to make a space or a wall. Animals determined to breed have a lot of will. (Trying to be polite here) If his parts can fit through the fence, it _can_ happen.

It may not happen, are you willing to take the chance? That is the question.

If a buck's "special purpose" can fit through the fence, he can breed through the fence. You can avoid this by running a line of electric wire on the inside of the shared fences, so that they do not touch the fence. I would, however, recommend a 2' walkway between fences.

If you want to avoid any chance of magical flying sperm, then the separation needs to be such that a "special purpose' either can't fit or can't reach.

I sold a doe 2 years ago, she had never been in the buck pen. I sold her open, never bred and priced as such. The lady emails me about 3-4 months later and says you never put her in with the buck? Because she just had quads! So yes flying sperm does happen, sheesh it was annoying but at the same time she was annoying so I just called it good, lost a bit of money but oh well.

My buck can spray a good 6 feet away when he's, um, cleaning his "special purpose." It only takes a drop hitting the target to get the doe pregnant.

I have week old triplets out there right now that there is no other explanation for. The girls are in a 4-5 acre pasture and the boys are in a 70ish acre pasture. They share one fenceline, field fencing. Been that way for 2 or 3 years now and this is the first 'through the fence' that I've had.

We had a doe that developed a uterine infection after kidding. It was pretty persistent and we decided to give her a year off. She was never in the same pen as the billy, not even for a minute. The following spring, my 10 year old came running into the house "There's something wrong with Betty. She is laying on the ground grunting and groaning!" We soon had a beautiful large doeling that looked very much like her sneaky father.

Solid walls do not work either. Watched one of my does back into the wall where a knot hole was and boy parts come from the other side.

Oh yes. I watched Big Mama back up to Martok's buck run and thought, "Could they? Naaaaah." That's how we got Simka and Latka.

We also had two whoopsie lambs started through the fence. One turned out to be the best sheep ever born on this place, my all-time favorite ram (sadly, I lost him this past spring).

Believe me, those guys can thread their forelegs through the fence and make very good contact.

ROFLOL! The words "Special Purpose" will haunt me with giggles for ever more!

My next question for all you myth busters out there.................

Will only an adult doe back herself up to the fence for him or will a young - 6 months old - doe do it too?

I had a plan with all my wire and a small two sided shed but if Beauty is in danger of a very young kidding that plan will have to change!

My goat was 5 months old when she backed up to the fence. Thankfully everything turned out fine.

hehehe...good to hear that this is indeed possible. I think my new yearling nigerian doe might have received some flying sperm prior to me purchasing her as she has a tiny udder just beginning & I've only had her a little over a month. Kept waiting for her to cycle so I could breed her. Then saw the little udder a few nights ago and palpated her stomach. Pretty sure I felt a kid. Thankfully the lady I bought her from said she'd provide a buck slip if she does kid so I can register them!

Here is a picture of the "innocent" little darling

I like the idea of having a walking space between the two fenced areas -- at least wide enough for a lawnmower to go through. Probably better if you have no spatial constraints would be to have the pens out of sight of each other.

I wouldn't rely on the electrical fence because you know the power will go out and you may or may not have a reliable backup system and next thing you know you have a pregnancy. Who knows the electrical current may add an element of erotic excitement. He he.

Good luck!

I had heard of this happening, so I fenced an area to run pigs between my buck and does areas.
