What registry for mini goats?

I know for someone that's had goats for years now I sure have a lot of questions lately!

Wondering what registry is best or which one most of you all use to register your mini's.
I'll be getting Mini Nubians, when I find what I want. So far I'm on the list for 3 different breeders, 1 of them is for next year already. A couple have does' kidding in June so we'll see. I'm just trying to be prepared.
Minelson and The Tin Mom like this.

The MDGA has more shows, but they also have "virtual shows" where you can send in video and photos of your goats for judging, thereby "showing" your goats without exposing them to cooties.

I have seen very little activity with TMGR.

I will not be showing any of the goats, they won't leave my property unless to go to the vet for something. I just want them to be registered for their kids & future buyers.

I know so many folks here have said before that it doesn't cost anymore to feed a registered goat verses an unregistered goat & they can get more money for registered stock. I just never thought it was needed(for me anyways)before, But to get the standards in a mini nubian & the generation I want to start with for breeding stock & also from disease tested herds they all seem to be registered so I'll go all registered.

I was VERY disappointed in TMGR. Screwed up papers with wrong colors & birthdates..... Complained, got the papers back, still wrong colors & they had the incorrect # of kids born in the litter listed. Gave up on them & tossed the papers.

Was very happy with MDGA though, much better organized. Plus the Vshows are neat. You can "show" your animals without leaving home. Take the required pictures, send them in & the judging is done online

I don't have mini's anymore, but my mom uses MDGA for all of hers & is very happy with them.

So if the breeders use a different registry then can they be changed to MDGA?

I think so. All of ours were registered with both, except 1 who was only TMGR, & mom had no trouble getting her registered with MDGA.

That depends. TMGR is, I believe, a little more lax in what they will allow in a goat's ancestry than MDGA is. If I were you, I'd confirm with MDGA that the goats you plan to get can be registered before you lay your money down. That is, if they're not already registered with MDGA.

The MDGA registrar is extremely helpful and responsive, so you should be able to clear up any gray areas without too much trouble.
