moldy straw

We bought some straw yesterday from our hay guy. I didn't get out of the truck when the bf picked them up. Just unloaded them and the bottoms have purple mold and when you hit them they "puff'' a little. Is it safe to peal off the bottom part and still use the top half or just throw the three bales away?

When in doubt, throw it out. That's how I deal with hay and I would do the same with straw

BTW, if this is your "regular" hay guy, you probably want to let him know the condition of the straw. He may know already <sigh> but I'd tell him for sure.

I wouldn't use moldy straw either, put it in the compost or burn it.

I'm calling my hay guy tomorrow and let him know. He's a nice guy so hopefully he will trade them out. If not a big old bond fire is in our future.
