Goat at MSU sheep barn

I found out a few weeks ago that there were goat(s) at the sheep barn here at Michigan State. Apparently there were a lot of trips so they used the milk from her, from what I understand. I was so excited to hear that there was another 'goat girl' on MSU campus, where so far I haven't heard goats mentioned except once or twice in passing.

We went to the sheep barn today to work with sheep in one of my classes lab section.

I saw one small LaMancha doe. She was very thin, possibly copper deficient, missing a BIG patch of hair on her back, and her hooves were REALLY long. Not to mention a suspicious lump on her side that was pretty big from what I remember - seemed bigger than an injection lump IMO.

I emailed the professor of the class asking if there was any way I can help with her, or who I should talk to.

Their sheep look GREAT.

I think it's an issue with her true owner, and the fact that these farms are money based. People think goats are a waste of time/money, so who'd spend the time helping a 'stupid goat'?

ugh. If my professor doesn't help (I mentioned the goat's state while in class, she brushed me off) then I'll email the sheep barn. IF that doesn't work, I'll raise heck elsewhere. >

Emailed professor, got the farm managers email.

Emailed farm manger. He didn't explain condition, really. He did say she weaned kids last week, and is being milked. I understand heavy producers loosing condition... but I don't feel comfortable with her condition.

Claims that the LARGE bald patch on the back was from the kids 'laying' on her.

Claims that he doesn't 'see' any signs of CL. I told him due to her longer hair, I had to FEEL her to find it. I didn't SEE it, either.

I emailed the main Large Animal vet at MSU, but I'm not thrilled with the response that I've gotten already. All in all, I got the feeling I'm just a dumb kid emailing about a stupid goat.
