Goat down

My 3 month old kid seemed drunk yesterday. Found it laying outside on its side this morning. Its legs are stiff, stomach is bloated, eyes are clear. But has mucus running out her anus.It rained last night and she was in a mud puddle, looked like she had moved around on its side during the night. Got her under a heat lamp in the barn, gave antibodic's. She lays their bleeting she tries moving ,like she is running laying on her side. Any help would be appreciated..

Temp? Anti-toxin? Weaned?

Mucousy poo is indicative of Cocci.

Was she on regular cocci prevention treatment?

Did she get vaccinated with CDT?

I've read here http://www.jackmauldin.com/health/enterotoxaemia.htm that the running/paddling movement they make is from enterotoxemia .

Your vet doesn't know beans, just like most livestock vets when it comes to goats. It's up to the owner to research the care of their livestock, especially when it comes to goats.

It is pretty impossible to say what's going on with so little info. I'd first do Enterotoxemia types C and D antitoxin. Since she's stiff, i'd probably do tetanus too. The TOXOID is a vaccination and will NOT treat her. The ANTITOXIN will TREAT problems.

Cocci treatment with a drug like dimethox or albon.

Bloat treatment.

If it were me, I'd look for a different vet asap.

Okay... best guess here based on some experience.

My bet would be a twisted gut. It seems that about 3 months of age this can happen. A goat does not have a solid internal structure... there's room for organ movement inside. At three months the goats seem most vunerable because it is at that age they like to jump and flip and spin in the air. They also like to tumble.

I would imagine the goat will have a very painful next day or so. I hope I'm wrong but we have had this happen to a couple kids and they die a miserable death. Almost as bad a urinary calculi.

I second giving the C & D ANTITOXIN ASAP. There are vaccinations she needs like CD & T Toxoid but that won't take care of what's going on with her today.

I would give her 10cc of the C & D Antitoxin at that age. How much does she weigh?

I'd also mix some baking soda in a little water so you can make little balls & get that down her throat too.

I'll keep my fingers crossed your little goat makes it.

Depends on your TSC. I've been told some places have it, some places don't. Any vet you call should be willing to sell you a bottle. It's non Rx, but a good vet should have some on hand. Cattle get enterotoxemia as well, so it's common and readily available.

I'd be surprised if they have it , and they will probably tell you the vaccine is the same thing, since they really don't seem to know a lot about what they sell

That's where I buy mine. It's in the cooler around the horse supplies (at least it is at my TSC)

Our Tractor supply sells it too, it's in the cooler like Jill said. Not the little bottle for the vaccine it's a bigger bottle & it has to say Antitoxin on it.

Sorry you lost the kid - autopsy sounds like a good idea.

Sorry for the loss of the kid. Please share the necropsy results. The twisted gut thing is something I have been following for several years. Unfortunately goats are animals looking for a reason to die. In the wild they have very short life spans because they are prolific breeders and have multiple kids and we hope to keep them for many productive years. Again... sorry for your loss because it is not easy for the goat or the goat owner.

Hey Ken, I didn't comment on your comment earlier in this thread..but I thought it had a lot of merit. I had a visual when I was reading it of how those little rascals practically turn themselves inside out when they are on a hard frolic. Thank you for sharing that..we think of twisted guts in horses and cattle..but I think maybe some "unexplained" deaths of perfectly healthy kids could be attributed to that too. Again..thanks.

I am so sorry for your loss and am glad to hear you are doing the necropsy, we just can't be sure what happened unless it's done.

If I had to guess I would think you were looking at Polio. What are you feeding?
