Unhappy Bad bad night

Yesterday I spent a lot of time hanging out with my two wethers, they were following me around as I did chores , standing for skritches and everything. Merlin (my favorite) was a little bit quiet but he was eating and following me around and acting his usual self.

I had a meeting at work today and I got home and Merlin was lying in the yard , with one back leg stretched out. His tongue was hanging out of the side of his mouth and he was breathing through his mouth and making these completely heartbreaking sounds His head was turned a little to the side, I tried to get him up and he tried to get up when he saw me but he couldn't.
His stomach looked a little distended so I thought of bloat maybe, I ran in the house to get the stuff and called the vet and left a message. I got back out there and he was on his side more, he saw me and lifted his head and made that sound, and put his head down on my lap and took his last breath

He was ok when I left for the meeting. I wish I had stayed home, maybe I would have been able to do something, I dont even know what happened other than bloat, but he didnt sound like he was full of gas, and wasnt that big. I did hear a lot of sloshing when i turned him to get him up.
Ive been crying all evening I should have been there sooner

I'm so sorry. It's hard looking back and seeing the indications afterward. I lost a buck like that a couple of years ago.

Huggs.

Oh, I'm so sorry. Please don't beat yourself up. You were there at the end and he knew you loved him. That counts for a lot. {{{hugs}}}

I am so sorry for your loss. They go so fast & sometimes we just can't save them.

What about having your vet do a necropsy on him? That may give you some answers anyways.
Do You vaccinate with CD & T?

Try not to think about 'what-if' (easier said than done, I know).

Devastating to be sure. My "boys" that were bottle babies are both gone now..Red and Black..and to this day..the memories of them are bittersweet. They were attached at the hip and they loved us with everything they had. I have no words of comfort..I just don't think that you should beat yourself up for not being there. It very well might have been something that you would have had no control over even if you were present.

Your other boy will be very lonesome..I really had to scramble with Black after Red died. He went into a funk that was unbelievable. You may have to find the other one someone to have a friendship with..we finally put Helen and her two young males in with Black and it was like a light was turned on. He loved them very much..just not like the relationship he and Red had.

Take care..

sometimes it takes something very hard to do to get a reason... and sometimes knowing that reason can save your other goats.

I am so sorry Shygal

I would be suspicious of Clostridium (enterotoxemia or overeating disease), make sure your remaining wether is up to date of CD&T (the CD is for clostridium , the T is for Tetnus). They go very fast like that with enterotoxemia. http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/livestk/08018.html

Don't be too hard on yourself, I once killed one of my goats (literally, on accident of course), it was horrible. I dragged her into the sauna and sat with her all day trying to save her but it was too late. I probably could have saved her almost every step of the way if I would have realized I was killing her. I loved that darn goat!! She was my favorite.

Thinking of you! It is so hard to loose an animal
