cysts on afterbirth?

Mama Red kidded yesterday afternoon, a buckling and a doeling (pictures coming soon, I promise!). Both are healthy and doing well, and her udder injury held up beautifully, did not reopen. I haven't tested her milk yet, but there is no swelling and kids are nursing from both sides.

When she passed the afterbirth, the upper attachment part was covered in about 20-30 small (slightly bigger than a pea) liver colored bubbles. Anyone know what this could be?

I don't know what the bubbles are. But I sure am relieved that the injury held up. That was scary to have that happen so close to kidding...WHEW! Looking forward to the pics!

I'm guessing it's the buttons, too... (they are the way the placenta buttons-up to the caruncles in the uterus)... it's not like a human uterus.. that's one big BLOP.. the buttons are all attached...they *unbutton* slowly a few at a time.. to lessen bleeding.. the reason to NEVER pull on a fresh placenta that is hanging..

((so happy Mama Red got the chance to heal up before the babies arrived.. congrats)

Yes, it looked like that, but not on the main balloon part of the placenta, only on the upper long skinny part (sorry I'm not familiar with my placenta anatomy...)

the main part may have been detached long enough that they were as swollen & noticeable .. the upper/skinny part was *fresher* I had company years ago (city gals).. of course we had goats kidding... I took one of the placentas... opened it up, stretched it out .. held it up towards the sunset... they all ooh'd & ahh'd.. it was like looking thru burnt orange lace.. (we are an easy to entertain bunch.. so are our friends LOL)

Very Interesting. And thanks, I really like seeing things that don't usually come up in normal day to day life. (at least for me). I guess I will go read up on goat anatomy before getting goats again.

I believe the formal name is cotyledons...... it has been a long time since I took animal repro in college so don't quote me on that!

So happy you have 2 healthy babies & Mama Red is doing well too. That injury of hers was pretty scarey & nice to know it's healing well & the kidding didn't seem to affect it or make it worse.

Very interesting indeed! Guess I never paid that much attention to one, other than to hope it was all there in one piece. They do look alot different than human placentas, seen more of those than I have of goats', but never considered the differences.

I was going to post that pic right after my doe kidded but I was really worried that it was cancer or some other problem...then I got busier and forgot it until I saw the OP's post. Great to know it was something "normal"!!

Congrats on the babies and I hope your doe heals fast and completely! bee
