Doe past due
I've got a three year old alpine doe that is overdue in having her second set of kids. She was put with a buck on Sept. 10, 2011. I seen him do the deed at least 4 times that day. She was taken away from the buck on the 12th and he left the property. No way, No how could she have been with another buck until last month. I sent off bloodsamples to biotracking in December and they showed "positive" results.
She's making a pretty tight udder. (not as tight as last year's prior to kidding)
She's not showing me any signs of labor or intended labor though.
We are in the middle of a 4 day COLD spell for our area. (15-30 degrees F. on average for 24hours.) I figured she'd throw down and kid while I was at work last night when no one would be on kid watch but she didn't.
According to the gestation book I looked online she should've kidded on Feb. 7. Any suggestions? How often do they go this far over?

Sperm lives for four days inside the doe, and it can take as long as a week for the doe to settle (the fertilized eggs implant). So give it a little while longer, but watch her like a hawk for contractions.
Hope this helps.

I'm in the same boat - have a 3 year old doe that is on her second kidding. Today is day 156, and she kidded last year on day 144. Ligaments are squishy but haven't changed in a couple of days, and one side of her udder is suddenly softer than the other, but I haven't seen her self suckling.
Hope your doe kids for you tonight - and mine too!

Lots of folks sound like they are having the same problems this year.
I hope francismilker & Wags that you both have happy, healthy babies real soon!

Nothing for me overnight
Leaving a 14 yr old friend and my 7 yr old daughter on kidding duty this morning with the phone number of my goat mentor handy while I run pick up a horse shelter. I put it off all last week thinking she was going to kid, but my horse is coming this afternoon so I can't put it off any longer.

No babies here yet. She'll most likely wait until tomorrow night when record cold temps are expected with winter precip!!!

Oh shoot, I saw you posted and was hoping you had a successful day and that it would rub off on me.
I didn't get the horse shelter picked up - the people that were supposed to help backed out at the last minute. Doe didn't kid, but at least my new horse arrived safe and sound. (I tried to pick her up a week ago - and totaled my truck when I hit black ice on the way to get her.)

Have you ever heard the old saying, "somthing aint right here."????
Well, something aint right here. I'm thinking of getting an ultrasound. Shse's got an udder that absolutely over tight. (I'm not being anxious here. Been milking critters for years.) SHe's now 10 days past due and it looks to me that she doesn't have much of a belly. "If" she is pregnant it's a single or very small twins. She's considerably smaller gutted than my nubians that aren't due until March 15th.

If she was bred on Sept. 10th, then she is actually only 2 days past due. Feb. 7th would have been 150 days from breeding.
Goats can kid from 145 to 155 days. We just use 150 days as a happy medium.
And don't discount multiples just yet. My rather slim girl gave me triplets.

Hoping she goes soon for you but Like Caliann said I don't think I'd get too alarmed just yet.
Maybe she has 2 or 3 in there but maybe they've dropped & she's just carrying them lower instead all out to the side.

No babies but very tight udder. I believe she's giving some kind of falso positive. There's absolutely no signs of tailhead ligaments going, vulva swelling or discharge, or stomach enlarging. She only has an udder. She was dried up about three months back. Her udder shrunk up like it should have and now has came back in the last thirty days like I'd expect it to.
Just no babies. No acting like she's fixing to kid. No "bed making". No nothing.
The only thing I have to go by is a visual breeding and a "positive" results from bio-tracking.

What kind of hay do you have? Fescue can cause this problem.

you could try milking her to relieve the udder and stimulate contractions - freeze the colustrum just in case.

The ONLY buck that was at my place after the Buck that bred her was a month old buck. I know young dairy breeds can become fertile early, but one month is stretching it.

Alice, I'm feeding chaff/alfalfa hay out of a bag to all the dairy girls. There is some free choice prairie hay available to them at all times but I don't think it has any fescue in it.
