Not a good Afteroon/Evening
This morning, all the goats seemed fine. This afternoon I find one of the babies standing in te water trough.....soaking wet, and shivering..... I get her out of the water trough and she walks over to the gate......and falls down in in a slimy mud puddle.
I am thinkng that she probably has a raging pneumonia......so, I put her across my lap (not takng the time to put a carrier in the bed.....and figuring that she would be warmer in the cab), and head to the vet's office.
The vet checks her over.......temp is normal, lungs sound good, but she is blind. He diagnoses her with 'goat polio'.......and she is wandering around the room. He gives her a shot of thiamine, gives me a bottle of thiamine and instructions for follow up shots. I head home.
On the way home she is grinding her teeth off and on, but she seems more alert. She lies quietly on the passenger seat all the way home.
I get home. and take her out of the truck.....she can't stand up.....and her abdomen is distended. I think, "Oh crap!! She is bloating!!" I take her in the house and lie her on the floor. I go over to the computer to look up the dosage of oil to give her.......while the pages are coming up, she stops breathing.......and she is dead.
At the vet's offfice, there was no sign of a distended abdomen......I am amazed at how quickly (maybe an hour from leaving the vet's offince until she was dead.
Has anyone else had any experience with bloat killing that fast???....or bloat being assiciated with polio????
