Unhappy lump question

I was rubbing the neck of one of my twin bucklings and felt a lump about the size of a dime. Absolute panic set in until I remembered that that is the site of his second CDT shot about 2 weeks ago. It is actually more shoulder than neck.

I am not the best at shots. I had posted at the time about re-using needles and using up the rest of the CDT or getting a new bottle. Well I got new needles and a new bottle of the CDT,,,but it was not the original brand. Anyone else get a lump from a SQ shot? I'll get a better look at it in the morning..right now it seems to be a hard lump, not red or shiney or leaking anything.

I rub, scratch and have my hands on all of them all the time..first lump of any kind with the exception of the does teats and I had that described to me as "stray milk cells".

I use my CD&T till it is gone or close to expiration. I use new needles, I had wondered about sterlizing the ones I used but it was not a good idea.

When I use the Colorado Serum CD&T there are no lumps, but when I use the other brand, it think it is Bar-Vac they would get lumps, so I stopped using that one. If you give them that brand massage it well for 30-60 seconds as soon as you give it to reduce the lump. One kid had that lump for weeks, I tried to sick a needle in it to get rid of it and it did not work.

I too use bar vac and I always get lumps. Maybe I need to change a different brand.

It sounds like just a site reaction to the injection. Unless it appears to be infected for some reason I wouldn't be too concerned. Just keep an eye on it, and it will probably go away.

Probably not CL, at that age and location. Especially if you KNOW that's where you put the vaccine.

I try to vaccinate in the armpit area, over the ribs behind the elbow. The key to not getting a bump is to get it UNDER the skin, not between the layers of skin. If you get it between the layers of skin it does NOT absorb/become effective and sometimes will even loose hair over the site. The skin over the shoulder can be quite tough, and the area over the ribs is quite thin and tentable.

I just use CDT till it's gone/expired as well. To help keep things clean, you should always clean the septum on all injectibles with alcohol before inserting a needle.

One of the reasons that goats under 6 months are not tested for CL is that it takes that long for the antibodies to show up in the blood much less for an abscess. On the doe I had that had a really bad case of CL, she was about a year before an abscess showed.
