it just keeps getting better
so, I am on "super alert" because of the coyotes, so what do I catch? My "stupid neighbor" stealing from my "good neighbor" .... ofcourse then his dog comes after me, so I fire a warning shot, then he tries to run me over, but his truck is in 2 wheel drive in reverse trying to back up a hill so all he does is spin oout.... cops made contact, but he refused to come out of his house.... ugh... never boring....

Oh, good Lord! Don't ask what could happen next; you'll find out. I'm glad you are okay, though!

I spent half the night watching out the window at the goat pens. I think this guy has such an intense hatred toward me because years ago his dog kept killing turkeys and chasing the goats and was put down by the Animal Control. It's the only thing that makes sense. I am pretty sure if he gets liquored up enough he may try to take out his anger on my goats. He knows how much they mean to me.
Thank you to everyone who has been hanging in with me. I think being able to talk about all this is the only reason I am still sane.... but trust me... while his break lights were in my face, the cross hairs were on the drivers side window... I was scared I was actually going to have to shoot. I am so glad he only had his truck in 2 wheel. If he had been sober enough to realize 4 wheel would get it to go........ I was just thinking maybe I need to research a restraining order.

I think a restraining order is a good idea. Or a new house somewhere else.

OMG, I'm so sorry! I dislike my amish neighbors and their animal neglect, but I have no worries like that.

Can't remember your set up, Mpete, but good dogs of your own might be in order if you don't have them already. Ours are the one reason I can get sleep at night sometimes. Glad you're okay. (and yes, a restraining order if you can get one at this point, could be a good plan. Won't stop a liquored up numskull, but it pads your file for future action if you have to go that far.

A couple of suggestions:
Document, document, document! Get a pad of paper and record any hostile or unwanted contact with the neighbor. Record dates, times, what was said, what was observed, etc. If it is not dcumented, it did not happen! It's easier to get a restraining order if you can say on such and such a date, my neighbor did this, said this.
In Michigan you obtain a restraining order through the Circuit Court, don't know about your State, but a phone call to the court should get your questions answered.
Also I would set up a hunting trail camera, near your animals. If the jerk tries anything, you may get it photographed.
A restraining order will not keep a fool away, but it will make an arrest much easier. Each crime has elements to make up that crime. The elements have to have been met in order to make an arrest and prosecute. If the elements have not been met, there is no crime. When a restraining order is in place, the elements are simple, the restrained party made contact with the protected party.
Hope this helps.

Get a couple of sensor alerts, they are cheap. If something breaks the line from the sensor to the receiver an alarm goes off in the house.

A restraining order is all well and good IF you don't live next door. It isn't a shield around you, and most drunk idiots will just ignore one. The "get a new house" idea is a great one, if you can. Being if the right won't be of much comfort if you have dead goats.

When you say document(which I should've been doing ) does the call into the sheriffs or 911 count? I am trying to get to the court house tomorrow... I had way too many kid appointments to get over there today

Yes
They keep those records for years. I keep a scanner on most of the time, and when they dispatch a police unit to a house, they often tell them how many times they have gone there before, and why, even if it was years ago.
A restraining order would be a good idea too.
Even though they don't really stop anything, they can make it illegal for him to even come NEAR your property, and it makes it easier for the police to arrest him BEFORE he does real harm
You can also send yourself E mails documenting any incidents, and sending it verifies the dates better than anything hand written

Ok. So I know every county is probably different, but where would I go -- or start to look for, the records of the last 12 years... yes, 12 years of stress from this guy.
Awesome idea with the sensors and camera... also, my 'good' neighbor had mentioned he was going to get one as well after the last time they were caught up to no good up here. The road is cut out of my property and dead ends into my driveway. My "good neighbor" lives directly across from my driveway, so only him and the utilities have easements through (the railroad tracks are just past my house). I just made the final arrangements to pick up my LGD on friday. But with him only being 9 mos of age, will he "protect?" He has already learned a lot from his parents, but is he old enough to be sufficient? I finished getting my sensor lights hooked up a little bit ago, so there is a lot more lighting down there, but I will still be sleeping with one eye open...

It's hard to say if he will be ready at that age.
Not all LGD's are agressive towards people.
He should be a deterrent to Coyotes though, and will improve with age

Check with the Sheriff, if you are inside the city limits, the local Police Dept. Also if you have a township police department, check with them. If you State Police takes criminal complaints, check with them also. All these places can also direct you to the right court to get that restraining order.
Also you may want to post "No Trespassing" signs. In Michigan there are two ways to charge someone with trespassing. 1" The property must be posted and subject enters the property in violation. 2: Suspect enters property of another and the property owner orders the subject off, The subject refuses to leave.
