I got back from the UCDavis goat day. I had a good time... Learned a couple of new things which is also exciting! I was glad to see a good turn out!

***There is a new drug that they are testing on goats: Draxin~~~Tulathromycin. Its labled for dairy cattle.
45 day study...
long lasting antibiotic
lactating dairy goats injected with cattle dose= 2.5 mg/kg or 1.1 ml/100lbs
all does (I think there were 15?)had injection site swellings all through the study, some minor, 1 broke out with several small bumps in the area.
33-45+ day milk withdrawl
Personally, I didn't like the outcome of the study. I think in some instances it will be appropiate use, but I am not sure of the outcome of the study... They only did a 45 day study.
***There was a confirmed report of scrapies in Ca in 2-2011. The goat was originally purchased from a herd with black faced sheep (who are the main focus in Scrapie) The goats from the original herd were destroyed and tested (19 of 30 were positive), the herd that had purchased them are being monitored. They can do a rectal tissue swab of live animals.
***With AI, goats ovulate towards the end of their heat cycle. Eggs live for approx. 6 hours while the sperm live for approx. 24 hours.

All of the speakers were great.

Of course there were tears shed over the loss of Karen Senn.

We love Draxxin here. Never had any swellings at injection site. It has been used as a last resort when something seems to not respond to normal anti-biotics. Never used in lactating doe. Very expensive, think last bottle cost $1,500 and I heard it has gone up another few hundred. But we gave some to a friend that had auction calves down with Pneumonia and the ones who were strong enough to make it 24hrs and allow the meds to do their job are now frisky and doing well. It claims to be a one shot wonder, and we agree. Just hope it does not get over used or pulled.

all the does in the study were from the same farm. I wonder if it was an environmental thing? I have "heard" of it being used around my area, but it was on meat goats with pretty bad uterine infection... it cleared it right up!!!
