*FINALLY* Got it figured out!

I started a thread titled Not Sure What To Do in reference to a doe I have that is off her feet. Ive been throwing all the 'pregnancy safe' stuff at her I can think of trying to get it figured out.

Well, this morning my buck went down the same exact way she did. Had the hubby help me get him on the stand, scrubbed and trimmed, scrubbed and trimmed. He had the same pocket in his hoof that she had the rock stuck in. And, while trimming his I noticed a funky smell (she did NOT have the bad smell) so I looked at a few pictures online and ya, classic hoof rot. Very minor case for both, but that's what it is nonetheless. At least, it looks very minor.

Going to start them both on the barrage of treatments required to fix it, right along with everyone else as I'm sure they probably aren't far behind. Only thing I cant fix is the ground, its wet and no indication of drying out any time soon.

I'm glad you figured out what was going on! It's always frustrating to not know.

Step one: Trim and treat hooves

Step two: Copper bolus

Oh. Copper is ESSENTIAL for hoof health. Note that the hoof rot treatments like KopperTox are copper based.

Less hoof rot if you copper bolus so they get it from the inside, too.

The bacteria will remain in the siol forever unless you remove all animals from the area.
The ground needs 3 weeks for the bacteria to die. During that time put all animals in a clean pasture or area. Clean and treat, I like Dr. Naylor's Hoof n heal, 2 x a day. Keep barn and new area very clean and dry.
Remove all old bedding in old area and let it dry real good.
It is really the only way to eliminate it for good.
Been there done that.
