Why such fancy names?

I understand the reason for having your herd name at the beginning of the goats' names, but why are they (and any registered animal, really) always so involved? Our herd name is Pear Creek, so is there any reason that we couldn't just name them things like Pear Creek Susie, Pear Creek Ralph, Pear Creek Stinkbomb, etc.? Someone please explain it to me, because it absolutely drives me nuts.

You name them anything you want to! I will be doing the same. Not using my farm name though as it is quite long, so will just use my herd prefix and whatever name I give - will not officially name the ones I intend to sell in case a buyer wants to name them.

I did give longer names to 2 of the girls that I have, both for my young nieces. Sarah's Lucy Lou, Bayli's Baby Girl. They love having their names tied to my goats.

Luckily we didn't have any more that year. Hoping to save Zeva for something special.

They don't have to be fancy or involved. Some folks just have fun with names...

I have a dog whose name after her kennel name is "What goes around, comes around" & her call name is "Karma"... She has a daughter named "Girls grab your guns", call name "Annie" & her litter mate is "I'm your Huckleberry", call name "Doc"

My mom & I used themes for her triplet sets. One group is named after islands, the other, alcoholic beverages (Reisling, Heineken & Bud)...

I've seen all sorts of names & you can make it as simple or complicated as you like

I dunno. My herd name is "Poneez" and they get named fancy names if I'm in the mood to be sort of creative, otherwise...

Of course, I don't yell out, "Ozark Jewels T Many Troubles! Poneez Airin' My Troubles! Kalimac Randybuck!" when I want them. I usually say, "Hey! Goats!" or call out "Trub! Airin'! Mac!" (unless I want Agnes or Rosie).

Some of the longer fancy names are due to the breeder including the sire's or dam's name in the Pedigree, such as Whey-to-Go Titania's Tafara. It is a "nod" to that animal in the pedigree. Of course we call her Tafara and my DD calls her "wonderful" LOL.

Otherwise, heck ya, we have lots of fun naming our critters!

Most goat names aren't fancy but some do include the sire in the name like does out of Companeros Voice of Reason often are named XXX farm Reason Cindy and stuff like that.

Yup. Usually some way of noting lineage in a registered name.
I use a (normally) two letter combo to indicate the sire and then try and indicate the dam line as well.
When you start having a lot of kids (and start selling bred does), you need some way to be sure you don't end up with the same name twice.

MORN*MIST HJF RV/URSULA TALIA
The HJF indicates that she was conceived at Hope Joy Farm. The RV stands for Rudy Valentino (her sire Maigc Are Nubians R Valentino) and the Ursula is her dam's name. Talia is the doe's name.

MORN*MIST UA/TALIA NATALIA

The UA here stands for UnRuli LDJ Achilles (the LDJ in that name stands for Lonesome-Doe Don Juan). Talia is the doe's dam and Natalia was the doe's name.

I can look at most of my registered/recorded goats in ADGA and tell at a glance who their sire is and who their dam is. A couple of exceptions are MORN*MIST GILLY & MORN*MIST GRETCHEN. They are the result of a bred doe (JaneEva bred to Kieran) being sold and the new owners choosing to go with just one name. The sad thing is I sold another doe to them and had the papers partially filled out- MORN*MIST RV/ESME and that is how they registered her. Without a name. The RV is Rudy and the Esme indicates the does dam was Esmerelda.
So you only have control over how you name the goats you register.

In the dairy cow world, you list the cow's sire and her dam's sire in the pedigree to help with breeding decisions later. It helps you avoid excessive inbreeding with that information at your fingertips.

I like regal sounding names just in case my goats ever win at Nationals or make a Top 10 list. I also have themes. My Saanens generally have music or dance related names. My Guernseys have names from Greek mythology. With my ADGA animals I try to incorporate the sire's name (or at least his initials). Violet Vale Midnite Mazurka is a daughter of Rock-Point Man After Midnite. Violet Vale Shadow Dancer is a daughter of Mcquitty-Farm Moonshadow. Violet Vale DFJ Rhapsody is a daughter of Jug-Tavern's DouglasFairbnksJr.

Ideally I like to have a 2 or 3 syllable name since those sound better when being called across the pasture. I do occasionally break my rule and have a one or four syllable name (such as Song or Prometheus).

My preference is for names that are a bit unique, although many of my goat names are not. Mazurka is one of my better names (ADGAgenetics only lists 18 other Mazurkas whereas there are 451 other Rhapsodys and 3,912 other names containing "Dancer").

My kids are all named with the sire's first initial in front.
When we had sisters B Mystify & B Miss Behavin, all their doelings have sire's initial then either Mys or Miss then their own name.
Now that we own RNSH Auto Repeater all his offspring have gun themes.
Rimfire usually gets called Rimmy.
Miss Behavin was always just Miss B.

I do it to have fun . Sometimes I have a registered name for them and call them something else but most of the time it is a modified version of their registered name. Although back when I first started and my first kid was born my dad teased me endlessly that I would end up naming it something weird and off the wall like Shabuka Luka . Guess what I did , yep I named her Shabuka Luka but we all called her Savannah.

I actually sold her to a gal on this forum a few years ago . Though now my dad is more careful about what he suggests .

I love to have fun with names. I usually try to include something that fist in with the lines, but not always. I just have fun with it.

One thing I love about the ABGA is a goats pedigree goes back to great grandparents on their papers.

I have fun with it. That is one part of having babies (for me) is the cute names we can pick. We did it with the show dogs we had too.

ADGA does as well (most registries I've dealt with do). But you need that paper in your hands to see that. If you have it in the name, you don't need that paper there.
For the majority of my does, their dams are not registered, so by including their name, I know who the dam is without having to look into my records (not that I need to but if in the future I need that info).

We add the sires' initials after Quicksilver Farms so we at least can remember years from now who the kid was sired by.

I only have two registered goats right now. Both are from the same farm, so have the same farm name but from there their names are totally different, as they have different fathers.

The buck is CBF TD Daredevil and the doe is CBF TZ Mew. The TD in the bucks name stands for Tap Dance (can't remember his full name), his sire and the TZ in the does name is for AGS Dragonfly USH TenZen, her sire. I call them Daredevil and Mew, when I talk about them or call them.

We have Cross Roads End Lady Antebellum, we call her Bella most often. Although now that she is pregnant and starting to show a bit, she gets called Bella Belly or Belly Bean a lot.

Our other doe is Beyond Goats Ariel's Star, we actually call her Missy or Lil'Miss most often.

I love coming up with creative registered names though. I liked the name Tin Mom and her family came up with for one of their goats so much, I used it for a character in my book.
