Testing the herd

I am excited and nervous! I am testing the herd for the first time in a couple of years. No flaming about that, I have had my reasons for not doing so. I have always bought from clean CAE/CL tested herds and I offer testing for anyone purchasing animals from me.

I am biting my fingers though over waiting for the results. I am sure they will be clean but you always have that small smidgen of worry. I am not bothering with CL because in the 9-10yrs I have had my herd I haven't seen once case of it and I also feel it is a waste of time unless you have visible signs that you have a case of CL on your hands. Just my opinion on that .

Anyways I am excited and needed to share with some fellow goat people . Now all we have to do is .

Justine

Good for you... the waiting is hard... (vet is due here at 10am on Thurs. for our annual CAE & pregnancy testing).. I'll send it off that afternoon.. but it'll get to Idaho too late for friday testing.. so it will be next week before I get results.. we test every year for CAE, so I know those will all beg neg.. it's the pregnancy tests that always have me waiting on edge!)

again, hope the wait isn't too hard on you!

I've been told that the CL blood test is VERY inaccurate and expensive. The ONLY test that will give you a true result is done on the pus from an abscess. So, why do the blood test?

I don't do the CL testing unless there is a questionable abscess.

The CAE I do annually, but that's because I prefer to have that statement from biotracking in hand when I sell my stock.

You only get a false positive if you have vaccinated, if you have not vaccinated and its positive then you may have internal abscesses. However a negative doesnt mean 100% either.

CAE testing can kind of go that way too, you can have an animal test positive one test and negative another, this is why we test yearly. its only a few bucks more and the fact you cared to test speaks to potential buyers.

Im behind the times on testing mine as well, I only have mothers and daughters, mothers and them have only been exposed to the same buck all their lives and have tested negative for several years so Im pretty comfortable they will be negitive.
