today's kidding

today's kidding - Goats
This is Callie's "today's the day" pose. She worried me with light labor all morning, and finally delivered the first about 11:30, a teeny tiny doeling.

It was maybe 45 minutes later when it was obvious that she was having trouble with Number 2. I checked, and sure enough, the next one was laying just a little sideways, with one leg forward and one back. He was WAY too big for her to get him out that way, but it was a very easy assist. A slight rotate, and slipping the backward leg forward, then he was out.

I don't know whether these pics do justice to how truly larger the buckling is than the doeling. He's easy twice her size; came out looking 2 weeks old.

Shilo waited all afternoon for her turn to lick them.

Awww, congrats on the new babies! Your dog is beautiful. She looks so much like my dog that at first I thought my dog had somehow snuck into your barn.

It sure irritated the dam, but what you gonna do? I figured it was good for her to meet them under my supervision, but they are safely back in the coop with their dam for the night.

Wow, he is a lot larger, I'm so glad there weren't issues.

My smallest doe kidded last week with a single 8lber, her normal kid weights are 5-6 lb twins. She took a while but pushed him out on her own, while I was reading up on c-sections...had me nervous for a while there.

May look that way, but in reality, she enjoyed being petted and wanted fussed over the whole time. She didn't even try to get away when I stuck my hand in, first to assist, and then twice more just to be sure.
