Record Keeping

How do you all handle record keeping? Is there software that you recommend or a website you go to? Do you keep everything on paper? Is there a specific record keeping book you would recommend? I suck at math so if there was a program or book that had graphs or charts in it I would be overjoyed! DH offered to build me a computer program but he's so busy I don't know when he would find the time.

That is a great question? I don't have an answer, but will be keeping tabs on it as I would like to know the answer as well.

I just have a big notebook that I write milk amounts and things I need to remember, like "Penny in heat" or "wormed today". Every now and then I key the milk amounts into a spreadsheet so that I can get totals and make charts.

I keep intending to write a program to use for this, but I keep intending to do a lot of things.

Pad of paper near the goats...( because I don't have a computer in their pen) lol, but I transfer the info needed to their personal record book inside the house. I do not have anything on the computer as of yet... I can make up a copy and print it off if needed, but mainly their registry #'s, shots, date kidded, sex and # of kids, and if applicable, milk test history. I also keep Blood Test records.
On my wall is a large YEAR calendar. I will mark days in heat or exposed to buck, then color code that doe so I know what day she gets shots, or what day she is due. Then when the kids are born, they are color coded the same way.

I'm in the process of watching a million youtube videos on Quickbooks pro2008.I have both neatreceipts and quickbooks. But what I've done for the last 4 years of business is just ignore the IRS.Now I can't really do that so I'm trying to do this right.I think actually I did find an spreadsheet for milk records but found that it wasn't any easier than just writing it in a book because none of the programs interfaced with each other. One for receipts, one for books, one for milk records, one for breeding....blah,blah.
Where I've got the worse issues is the fact that my farm is my income but not one product supports me.I have a hog income, milk income, cheese income, soap income, french alpine income, icelandic sheep income, produce income, pet grooming income and pet boarding income and matching expenses for all that, plus pet expense, people expense and auto expense.HOW DO YOU KEEP TRACK OF ALL OF IT?

Right now they each have a folder with their names on them. Then anything dealing with them from shots, to heat records, date of birth, weights, and much more goes into that folder. Also have folders for things like wormers and doses, show records. I want to get this program I keep seeing at the livestock shows but its 350 bucks and I can't just make myself pay that right now.

I have been playing around with Kintraks. It does have an accounting portion but I haven't used it. Doesn't have milk records but I have a nice excel sheet I made for that stuff.

I use Kintraks as well. Really like it, has a place for health records, including weights, notes for shots and any treatment and will remind you when to give the next one. Pedigrees, finances, offspring...just no milking records. I use a spreadsheet for that, so it doesn't bother me.

Software
Computers can simply many tasks on a farm. Sheep and goat producers can use computers to manage their finances, balance least-cost rations, and keep records on their flock or herd. Many universities have developed spreadsheet templates and databases that can be downloaded for free. Most agricultural software companies offer free trial versions of their software. Some software can be used online.

On this page, links are listed alphabetically according to type of software: farm and ranch, livestock management, flock-herd management, ration balancing, economics, pedigree, and fair management
