Does anyone have a camera in the barn

I'm thinking about getting DH a monitoring/video system for Christmas. I don't want to spend a ton of money on it but I want a reliable one. I sure could use some recommendations as I know nothing about these things

I don't have one, but I'm going to add questions...

Do you have to have unobstructed line of sight between the camera and your house (where you will view it)?

Will it transmit through barn tin?

Alice, questions are good! I need to learn as much as possible in a short amount of time in order to get this for Christmas . I've wondered about how far away the barn can be in order to get good reception...didn't think about obstruction issues. I saw one that you view from your computer which would be ideal for us since we both always seem to be at the computer in the evening.

I used to have one.... years ago. It was black and white and needed a clear sight line to the barn and the monitor had to be in front of a window at the house. The barn is....I dunno, a hundred yards? from the house. I don't think we spent over 75 bucks for the whole thing, though. I may be in the market for one before my first kidding season starts

Oh I want one of these too. My bf's Sister picked up a brand new one at auction for 80 bucks. (lucky gal) I do have a baby moniter in my barn and I can hear EVERYTHING. Even BF's mom who lives next DOOR when she's out talking to the cows.

How far away is your barn from the house?

My hubby is a Nicet Level IV security tech. We have a camera in the barn and one in the riding arena. two purposes: #!1 secuirty ...obviously and #2 birthing of goats and horses. We have ours set up to view our birthing stall that can and has been used for cow, horses, and goats. Works great. Somewhat like CCTV. We do not have the audio hooked up b/c I do not want to know what my boarders are saying out there and also because animals make a lot of loud rude noises at night and WILL keep you awake. (Ask me how I know!) We have caught every birth here. I just sleep in the same room as the TV it is hooked up to and wake up every now and then and check things out. It transmits through our metal barn perfectly. You may have a lighting issue with cheaper models. Ours can be used similar to a night vision type of thing. I will try to find out various models, thepros and cons, and how much they are for you from DH.

We had one when we were waiting for our horse to foal a few years ago. Would like to have one for the goats.

I have a color sound/video camera from harbour freight... a whole $25. It is hooked up to an extra tv in the house when needed. It is 108 feet from the house. I had to buy an additional video cord to string it that far, and taped the ends with electrical tape to keep out the moisture.
